This also comes with an enhanced awareness on the part of professional forgers that their paintings might undergo scientific investigation. Are you like me an admirer of Leonardo da Vinci ? Do you want to know more about the existence and authenticity of two other Mona Lisa? Did you know that his Salvatore Mundi, lost for decades, reappeared in 1900, to be first declared a fake, then hailed as genuine in 2005 ? Were you aware that Van Gogh’s Still Life With Meadow-Flowers And Roses was painted over muscled wrestlers mentioned by the artist in a letter to his brother Theo? Had you realized that Manet’s admiration of Velasquez prompted him to produce an Infanta that fooled everybody for a century? Then, like me, you will be kept breathless reading The Scientist and the Forger …

However Dr. Ragai ’s book is not only an impressively well documented thriller, summarizing the exciting events that in the past century have occurred on the International Art Scene ; it is a scientific book describing the latest and most up to date techniques used in authenticating art works . It also provides the reader with an insight on the psychological set up of viewers and that of forgers and introduces us to the back and front stage of courts of law where decisions affecting the Art History of the world are being decided. Most important it reflects on moral issues that concern us all: the dilemma of conscientious, but unspecialized judges, of impartially meticulous, scientists, of knowledgeable, but sometimes emotionally involved connoisseurs, having to decide whether they are confronted with the hitherto unknown work of a great master or with that of an unscrupulous, brilliant forger.

This very well written book provided me with several hours of very pleasurable reading in the world of art and the scientific techniques used to detect forgeries. The techniques discussed are introduced on a need to know basis and in language that is easily accessible to a non-specialist. Interestingly, this book provides the reader with a glimpse into the psychology of the art forger, the art collector and connoisseur highlighting the impact of art forgery on the art milieu. Rich with its many intriguing examples of forgeries, some of well-known works and involving a wide variety of different styles of painting, this book was a true joy to read.

This book is fascinating, authoritative and scientific in its discussion of some of the most recent and newsworthy forgeries which rocked the art world. It cleverly delves into the mind of the forger to uncover the elusive answer to the question of what motivates and drives a forger, and illustrates the great lengths to which these forgers will go to perpetrate their deception. It masterfully navigates the intersection between art and science, highlighting the rapidly growing role of science in the authentication process, while at the same time acknowledging the importance of, and need for ongoing collaboration between scientists, art connoisseurs and art historians. If you, like me, are an art lover who is fascinated by the scandalous headlines in the art world, and are curious about the state of the art techniques used to uncover the fraud and preserve the integrity of the art market and art world, then this book is for you! It is very well written and thought provoking.

Stephen Greenblatt (Ph.D. Yale) is Cogan University Professor of the Humanities at Harvard University. Also General Editor of The Norton Anthology of English Literature, he is the author of eleven books, including The Swerve: How the World Became Modern (winner of the 2011 National Book Award and the 2012 Pulitzer Prize); Shakespeare's Freedom; Will in the World: How Shakespeare Became Shakespeare; Hamlet in Purgatory; Marvelous Possessions: The Wonder of the New World; Learning to Curse: Essays in Early Modern Culture; and Renaissance Self-Fashioning: From More to Shakespeare. He has edited seven collections of criticism, including Cultural Mobility: A Manifesto, and is a founding coeditor of the journal Representations. His honors include the MLA’s James Russell Lowell Prize, for both Shakespearean Negotiations: The Circulation of Social Energy in Renaissance England and The Swerve, the Sapegno Prize, the Distinguished Humanist Award from the Mellon Foundation, the Wilbur Cross Medal from the Yale University Graduate School, the William Shakespeare Award for Classical Theatre, the Erasmus Institute Prize, two Guggenheim Fellowships, and the Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of California, Berkeley. Alfred David (Ph.D. Harvard) is Professor of English Emeritus at Indiana University. Barbara K. Lewalski (Ph.D. Chicago) is William R. Kenan Professor of English and of History and Literature at Harvard University. She is the recipient of the MLA’s James Russell Lowell Prize for Protestant Poetics and the Seventeenth-Century Religious Lyric and the Explicator Prize for Donne’s Anniversaries and the Poetry of Praise. Her other books include Paradise Lost and the Rhetoric of Literary Forms, Writing Women in Jacobean England, Milton: A Critical Biography, and The Polemics and Poems of Rachel Speght (editor). Lewalski is the recipient of Guggenheim and NEH Senior fellowships and is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and Honored Scholar of the Milton Society.

Lawrence Lipking (Ph.D. Cornell) is Professor of English and Chester D. Tripp Professor of Humanities at Northwestern University. He received the Phi Beta Kappa Christian Gauss Prize for The Life of the Poet. He is also the author of The Ordering of the Arts in Eighteenth-Century England; Abandoned Women and Poetic Tradition; and Samuel Johnson: The Life of an Author and editor of High Romantic Argument. Lipking is the recipient of Guggenheim, ACLS, Newberry Library, Wilson International Center for Scholars, and NEH Senior fellowships and is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

George M. Logan (Ph.D. Harvard) is a Senior Fellow of Massey College in the University of Toronto and the James Cappon Professor of English Emeritus at Queen’s University, Canada, where he was head of the English Department for nine years and an award-winning teacher. He is the author of The Meaning of More’s Utopia and principal editor of the Cambridge edition of Utopia (Latin and English), editor of the Norton Critical Edition of Utopia (3rd edition), More’s History of King Richard the Third, and The Cambridge Companion to Thomas More, and coeditor, with Gordon Teskey, of Unfolded Tales: Essays on Renaissance Romance; he has also written a history of the Indiana University School of Music.

Deidre Shauna Lynch is Chancellor Jackman Professor and Associate Professor of English at the University of Toronto. She is the author of The Economy of Character, which was awarded the MLA’s Prize for a First Book, and editor of Janeites: Austen’s Disciples and Devotees and, with William B. Warner, Cultural Institutions of the Novel. She is also an editor of The Norton Anthology of English Literature. She is the recipient of fellowships from the National Humanities Center and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, of the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, and of the Northeast Association of Graduate Schools’ Graduate Faculty Teaching Award.

Katharine Eisaman Maus (Ph.D. Johns Hopkins) is James Branch Cabell Professor of English at the University of Virginia. She is the author of Being and Having in Shakespeare; Inwardness and Theater in the English Renaissance; and Ben Jonson and the Roman Frame of Mind; editor of a volume of Renaissance tragedies; and coeditor of English Renaissance Drama: A Norton Anthology, The Norton Anthology of English Literature, and a collection of criticism on seventeenth-century English poetry. She has been awarded Guggenheim, Leverhulme, NEH, and ACLS fellowships, and the Roland Bainton Prize for Inwardness and Theater.

James Noggle (Ph.D. UC Berkeley) is Professor of English at Wellesley College. He is author of The Skeptical Sublime: Aesthetic Ideology in Pope and the Tory Satirists; his second book, The Temporality of Taste in Eighteenth-Century British Writing, is forthcoming from Oxford. He is the recipient of fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies and the American Philosophical Society.

Jahan Ramazani (Ph.D. Yale and M.Phil. Oxford) is Edgar F. Shannon Professor of English at the University of Virginia, previously the Mayo NEH Distinguished Teaching Professor. He is the author of Transnational Poetics, which won the Harry Levin Prize of the American Comparative Literature Association, and of Poetry of Mourning: The Modern Elegy from Hardy to Heaney, which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. He is also the author of The Hybrid Muse: Postcolonial Poetry in English and Yeats and the Poetry of Death: Elegy, Self-Elegy, and the Sublime. He is coeditor of The Norton Anthology of Modern and Contemporary Poetry. Ramazani is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship, a Rhodes Scholarship, and the William Riley Parker Prize of the Modern Language Association.

Catherine Robson (Ph.D. UC Berkeley) is Associate Professor of English at New York University and a faculty member of the Dickens Project. She is the author of Men in Wonderland: The Lost Girlhood of the Victorian Gentleman and Heart Beats: Everyday Life and the Memorized Poem (forthcoming), and has received fellowships from the NEH, the Guggenheim Foundation, the University of California, and the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin.

James Simpson (Ph.D. Cambridge) is Douglas P. and Katherine B. Loker Professor of English at Harvard University and former Chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at the University of Cambridge. An Honorary Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities, he is the author of Piers Plowman: An Introduction to the B-Text (1990); Sciences and the Self in Medieval Poetry (1995); Reform and Cultural Revolution, 1350–1547; Volume 2 of The Oxford English Literary History (2002); Burning to Read: English Fundamentalism and Its Reformation Opponents (2007); and Under the Hammer: Iconoclasm in the Anglo-American Tradition (2010).

Jon Stallworthy (M.A. and B.Litt. Oxford) is Senior Research Fellow at Wolfson College of Oxford University, where he is an Emeritus Professor of English Literature. He is also former John Wendell Anderson Professor at Cornell, where he taught after a career at Oxford University Press. His biography of Wilfred Owen won the Duff Cooper Memorial Prize, the W. H. Smith Literary Award, and the E. M. Forster Award of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His biography of Louis MacNeice won the Southern Arts Literary Prize. He is also the author of Rounding the Horn: Collected Poems and Singing School: The Making of a Poet, and editor of the definitive edition of Wilfred Owen’s poetry, The Complete Poems and Fragments; The Penguin Book of Love Poetry; The Oxford Book of War Poetry; and coeditor of The Norton Anthology of Poetry. Stallworthy has received a Guggenheim Fellowship and is a Fellow of the British Academy and the Royal Society of Literature.

Jack Stillinger (Ph.D. Harvard) is Center for Advanced Study Professor of English Emeritus at the University of Illinois. He is the author of The Hoodwinking of Madeline and Other Essays on Keats’s Poems, The Texts of Keats’s Poems, the standard edition of The Poems of John Keats; Multiple Authorship and the Myth of Solitary Genius; Coleridge and Textual Instability; and Reading "The Eve of St. Agnes." He is the recipient of Guggenheim and Woodrow Wilson fellowships and is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

M. H. Abrams (1912―2015) was Class of 1916 Professor of English, Emeritus at Cornell University. He received the Phi Beta Kappa Christian Gauss Prize for The Mirror and the Lamp and the MLA's James Russell Lowell Prize for Natural Supernaturalism. He is also the author of The Milk of Paradise, A Glossary of Literary Terms, The Correspondent Breeze, and Doing Things with Texts. He is the recipient of Guggenheim, Ford Foundation, and Rockefeller Postwar fellowships, the Award in Humanistic Studies from the Academy of Arts and Sciences (1984), the Distinguished Scholar Award by the Keats-Shelley Society (1987), and the Award for Literature by the American Academy of Arts and Letters (1990). Now I know that there are favorites that have been left out thus enraging some readers. And yes, I know not everything can be included. But let me list two poets who should be known to anyone studying English literature. The first is Louis MacNeice who has been included in past editions. His poems are filled with imaginative use of image, solemnity, and humor.

The second is Thomas Traherne, one of the metaphysical poets. Traherne was largely unknown in his life time and was subsequently forgotten for over two hundred years before being rediscovered around the beginning of the 20th century. One hundred years later he's still being ignored. His poems of innocence are incredibly moving. "The Salutation", a poem imagined through the awed eyes of a child just born into this world is simply one of the greatest poems ever written. No qualifications are necessary. Please do yourself a favor and listen to Gerald Finzi's setting of this and other poems of Traherne. What a gorgeous and moving composition. The piece is titled, "Dies Natalis". "A stranger here, strange things doth meet, strange Glory see, strange treasures lodg'd in this fair World appear, strange all and New to me: but that they mine should be who Nothing was, that Strangest is all; yet brought to pass."

Great Intro Source for Eng Lit

Norton is well-established in its delivery of quality literature text books. I've used countless in my degree program. This one, the Major Authors, holds no surprises for anyone even fleetingly familiar with the study of English Lit. What it does do is provide thoughtful and informative introductions and explanatory material for the works included, as well as access to ebooks and study materials through a companion website. The supplemental materials help with perspective and a deeper understanding of the authors and their works. I've read others--but Norton really is the King of Lit (also used American Lit and African American Lit books from Norton). The set was available through my college bookstore, but Amazon saved me both time and money--both things that students never seem to have enough of. Thanks, Amazon!

The Rescued Soul has been a great source of knowledge given in such a personal way. I have gained so much clarity and understanding about my own abuse. Christina Enevoldsen has addressed so many things about sexual abuse that I truly believed pertained only to me and my own thinking. I am so grateful for her courage, wisdom and knowledge.

I am reading "The Rescued Soul".. savoring every bit of it as it reveals more and more of the feelings I've had for a long time... the questions at the end of the chapters help me to put into words the feelings I've never been able to share with anyone. I recommend this book for any childhood abuse survivor who needs help in the healing process. And I love Christina Enevoldsen's writing style.. she gets to the point without the need for a degree in psychology.

I am an abuse survivor, having been through 10+ years of therapy and dozens of self help books. This book BY FAR has been the most amazing and helpful resource I have ever come across. Not only does the author "get me", my struggles and what I have been through down to the smallest details (to the point where I am getting goosebumps) the exercises are just incredibly powerful and helpful.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for writing this book. It is such an amazing resource. In addition, it is so well, written, so eloquent, honest and unpretentious. You are clearly a very smart and incredibly strong woman.

The teacher had asked that everyone get a copy since the school system no longer provided it and it was a good resource to study the period from 1740-1789. Since the book is written & published in Great Britain the use of certain British words we Americans are not accustomed to seeing gives an interesting insight into the culture from which America was based. It's also interesting that we're using a British textbook to teach our US students. The perspective on events that occured during that period is quite interesting.

Series Finale, Excellent read

The final book in a wonderful series. When I began reading the Unbounded series, I thought it was quirky and unique, but just one book in I was hooked. This book moves quickly taking a few twists and turns along the way. It is helpful if you have read not only the novels, but the novellas as well. Erin and Ritter are still the center of the action, but Mari, Keene and the others are also shown at their best. I found this to be better than the previous book, and the novellas really helped set the stage. The climax is exciting, daunting and haunting. While I hope that there will indeed be more novellas to partner with this series, Ms. Branton has really taken the Renegades to a new level and ended the story with style.

Awesome last book in the series!

I have read every book in this series and could hardly wait for this final book to be released! It did not dissapoint! The characters in this book have a way of drawing you in. Their love and loyalty to each other makes you want to develop those kinds of friendships in your own life. Their willingness to risk their lives to protect the entire human race is amazing. I would recommend this whole series however each book can be read without reading the ones before it. Another great book Teyla!

A must read series! Full of surprises and an incredible story!

I picked up the Book 1 of these series through a recommendation. The story is so well developed and the character so details, that it just sucks you in. I ended up getting and reading ALL 5 books in the series! Highly recommend you start with book 1, since they are linked and the story continues as you go through each book. Full of surprises, well developed characters and a very intriguing story. Well worth your time and investment. I truly enjoyed it and would highly recommend it

Good read, very informative. The chronological of events are a little scattered. It was interesting narrative of the Viking and took much of the pre conceived view one had about their history and life style.

Cheerleader, soccer player, honor roll student. One of the good kids at her middle school.

About the Author

Paige Rawl is an accomplished speaker and an inspirational figure for the tens of thousands of kids to whom she has spoken. Today, Paige is a national youth advocate, antibullying crusader, and powerful HIV/AIDS educator. Paige has been featured in multiple national media outlets, including USA Today, People magazine, Seventeen magazine, Nick News with Linda Ellerbee, the Huffington Post, and Poz magazine. Since Paige was eight years old, she has participated enthusiastically in pageants. Most recently, Paige was Miss Indiana Teen Essence 2011 and Miss Indiana High School America 2012. She is currently a student at Ball State University, where she plans to study molecular biology.

Ali Benjamin's work has appeared in print, online, and on television. She lives with her family in rural Massachusetts.

Should be required reading in middle school. Empowering to young people who want to make a difference.

Paige Rawl is an all-American girl- popular, an "A" student, a cheerleader, beauty-pageant winner and issomeone who had been born with HIV, stabilized by a good regime of medication. Life was good. Until she told her best friend, while trying to reassure her that every family had health issues. Hours later her middle school was engaged in a massive bullying orgy that continued unabated for years. When cheerleading on the top of a pyramid formation, shouts of "P-AIDS" her hated nickname, distracted her and caused a serious fall. Her principal and counselor refused to get involved with her "drama", her soccer coach who looked at her confidential files suggested using her disease to scare the other team. There were daily taunts in the hall, vicious notes on her locker and even her boyfriend was told to drop her incessantly.

There were no attempts to stop the bullying, to require good character on the part of her schoolmates or to educate them about HIV and its low possibility of transmission. It almost cost her her life, as bullying has done to so many.

She met others who were much worse off- a boy who had been injected with HIV-tainted blood by his father who didn't want to pay child support, a gay teen who was beat up by bullies and whose religious family couldn't accept him, girls who were slut-shamed after being raped. Inspired by the Ryan White story, she got angry and tried suing the school for not providing a safe environment. And she started speaking out nationally against bullying and is known for her work today.

This autobiography should be required reading for middle school students, touching on such themes as moral character, bullying, HIV-AIDS and making a difference in the world.

a heartbreaking tale of hate and healing and HIV and hope

Oh, how this book hurt and helped, with each page.

One of my children is HIV+. After we adopted this child, my husband and I lost our best friends. It stung. Our child has no idea what happened with these friends, because our child never got to know them, so this time we were able to shield our dear one from that hurt. I know that won't always be the case, though. So in some ways, I think that rejection was a good lesson for us to learn. I won't ever know what it's like to be judged or bullied for having HIV, but that experience was the closest thing to it. In losing those friends who wouldn't or couldn't understand that HIV was no risk to them or their children, we shared in the pain that people like our child and like Paige Rawl face.

Paige was just a kid with a chronic condition, having no idea that HIV carried any more stigma than her diagnosis of asthma. She was an A+ student, a cheerleader, an all around good kid. Then she shared her status with her best friend - her first best friend - and everything changed. That girl told everyone, and Paige was called PAIDS, mocked in the halls, and - in the most heartbreaking sections - let down by the very adults who should have protected her: her school counselor, administrators, and soccer coach, the last of whom joked that they could use Paige's status as an advantage on the soccer field because opposing teams would be scared of catching AIDS from her. I'm so thankful for Paige's mother, who never once doubted her and who understood in a deeper way that I will because Paige's mother is also HIV+. But even the love of a mother isn't enough sometimes, as the bullying got so bad that Paige was having seizures from the stress and cutting herself as a coping mechanism and dropping out of school to be homeschooled instead and then attempting suicide. Thank God that she didn't succeed in that attempt, because her adversity has shaped her into a powerful advocate for anti-bullying efforts and for HIV/AIDS awareness, but as a mama and former public school educator, I ache for what she had to go through.

To be honest, while this book ends in a "Positive" way, it broke my heart more than it lifted it up. But I think that's a good thing, because it inspires me to continue to educate others in hopes that my child will grow up in a more accepting world than Paige did. As she writes in the preface, "But I was beginning to realize that sometimes a person doesn't get to choose whether she joins or fights. Sometimes the joining is impossible, sometimes the fight chooses you. The universe plucks you - you, specifically - out of all those souls out there and hands you something that makes fitting in and going with the flow utterly out of the question." So it was for Paige. And so it is for me, as I stand with her as an ally and an advocate for my child and countless more.

Staying POSITIVE!

This book exceeded all of my expectations.
Every.
Single.
One.

I am so impressed and touched by this story.

Paige Rawl was born HIV positive. She has always taken medication at the same time other children eat breakfast, and gone to doctor's appointments when other children were playing sports. Paige never seemed to have a problem with this, because for most of her childhood, Paige did not know of her HIV status.

But times have changed for Paige. She was beginning middle school, meaning that a new reputation had to be created and upheld. This means that Paige would enter several beauty pageants, attend class lock-ins and dances, and make new friends. But one thing that Paige might not have expected, is the disastrous and painful aftermath of informing Yazmin - a friend she had known for the majority of her life - of her HIV status. She could have never imagined what would happen next.

POSITIVE is a story, but most importantly, it is Paige's story. POSITIVE is a story about illness, bullying and a lack of acceptance, but POSITIVE is also a story about new hope when Paige believed there was none, new and better experiences when Paige thought she couldn't survive anymore, and reversing stereotypes when Paige was invited to speak at several HIV-centered events. POSITIVE is the story about change, inspiration and hope. POSITIVE is just that, remaining positive when everything else seems to crumble. That is what Paige does best.

Paige Rawl has an exceptional writing style and a way with words. Her story clicks with me and resonates with me so much that I finished the entire memoir in one day. I never wanted to put this book down, and I never wanted the telling of her story to end. Paige uses the perfect amount of details and life events within her story that it feels like the reader was on the journey with her.

Perhaps this was because all of this drama unfolded in middle school, or just the sense that all of this drama unfolded at all, but I clicked with Paige instantly. I wanted to scream at her counselor when she was told just to stop the drama and deny her HIV status. I wanted to scream when Paige was told that no one believed that she was framed when Yazmin found that note on her locker. I also wanted to run and support her when Yazmin's sister threw a McDonald's drink at her.

I really loved this book, because it is not just a story. It was, is, and will be Paige'sstory. This is a book about life turning upside-down, broken relationships, and life throwing you under the bus. This book is not just about an HIV status. This book is about being POSITIVE.
