Great Pace and Action

Quick read with plenty of Fleet engagements, interesting twists and the story line flows. While Book 1 had a certain number of skeptics regarding the plot line--they were proved wrong with this offering. This author continues to improve with each new book and has a future in this genre. If you are a military science fiction fan, this offering does not disappoint. I will purchase the next book in the series.

Keep It Real Nick

I don’t believe Nick Webb put a lot of thought into this one. It was more of an easy laid back read with none of the perks that The Constitution book reveled . Beside another Alien encounter there’s nothing new or interesting added here to the sequel that really made this read worthwhile. In fact , there wasn’t anything clever written or Anything that actually made a whole lot of sense had this been our reality set sometime in the future. . Take the Captain Granger for instance. He should have been promoted to Real Admiral at the end of Book One. If not then , then he should have been promoted at the beginning of the Warrior Book - OR - when he leads over 150 space cruisers into enemy territory. No mere Captain would be in command of such a sizable fleet. And at the end of Book Two in The Legacy Fleet Trilogy , Granger should have been promoted again to Vice Admiral. But I guess not ..the author needs a hero , and that has to be a Captain. Speaking of which , Captain Granger was coming off like a comic book hero in the first few chapters while patting himself on the back. He wasn’t being very professional like a man wearing the Navy Uniform. And then there is the only other Admiral in this book who was taking advice from a Captain. That would be our hero - Captain Granger of course. We don’t know what kind of Admiral - Zingano was because it was not specified. His character was a blank , but he could have been a Fleet Admiral had Nick taken the time to make it more realistic. As it turns out we will never know.. He was more like an empty character who always supported the hero of the day , Captain Granger. Let me say that again -- Captain Grangerrrrr -- To The Rescue! It has a nice ring to it right?! But if he is Still a mere Captain by the time Book 3 comes out, than you can count me out.

Beyond all the hero nonsense , this book was filled with several holes that wouldn’t have actually happen in reality. Like: Once Proctor found a way to detect the alien gene , this process should have been conducted throughout the fleet before operation Battleaxe. And then Captain Granger calls the shots sending two thirds of Earths fleet into enemy territory on a whim without being properly prepared. Then when he gets there he keeps thinking he might have forgotten something.. And again all we see are Navy Cruisers , Some being heavy, some light and no mention of Space Battle Cruisers, Space Carriers or Destroy escorts , or even a single Battle Ship in sight. We also don’t get a clear picture or know much about the Alien ships , other then they are Alien Carriers that hold lots of space fighters and shoot green beams. We also got a good look at President Avery who came off like a hard bitten tramp. I could have done without the story of her holding another man’s junk in her hands , before she grew up and turned into a twisted woman. All in all.. this is a laid back read for the adolescent reader who might find it humorous from time to time. My opinion is that It’s not well thought out , not very cleaver or being clear on certain situations that should have been revealed. I say it’s time to put down whatever you been smoking Nick , and add some sense into your next science fiction book , or perhaps you can keep it juvenile and hope for the best - when you know you can do better.

Not deathless prose but fun!

I signed up to be notified when this was published and bought (and read!) it the same day (blew my plans all to hell too but hey.....).

It's space opera but FUN space opera. The science (in my opinion) has some holes in it........ 'Streaming smoke' in space? In debris fields so think you SEE lasers, but don't degrade those lasers? Debris fields that never seem to hit/damage any ships 'flying' thru them? You get the idea.

Other reviewers have pointed out the similarities to Battlestar Galactica.....not being a fan, I can't addressed that. The space battles are fun, and have enough excitement to keep you interested.

Bottom line----- this isn't deathless prose. Will this be a classic 50 years from now? Hell no! (Sorry Mr. Webb). Is it worth the money I paid? Hell yeah. For what it is, it's worth reading.

Excellent Story Building

I love the concept of this book. Lily is a young woman who grew up in a privileged family. She had money, but the home lacked love and nurture. Lily is a nurturer and has found her calling helping girls who have come from neglect and abuse. She finds strays girls and provides a safe place for them to recover and thrive.

While helping out a young girl, she meets Jameson. He is her perfect match. He compliments her and supports her efforts. He is not he man her family envisioned for her, he comes from a nurturing home that didn't have a lot of means. But he know love and how to love. The things that Lily needed from a family.

The book started a little slow for me. It builds upon the struggles that Lily and the girls are going through. As I got about half way through the book, I started to appreciate the beginning more. It is an important part of the building of the story. I am not a huge fan of instant love, this book has that, but is done well.

This book has kissing and while there isn't current abuse, it does refer to past abuses of the girls, including sexual abuse.

When I read the synopsis of this book, I was intrigued. There are so many ways the author could go with this story:

I enjoyed reading House Without Lies. I could feel Lily's passion for helping the teens she had in her care. I could relate to so many of her emotions. Mario, AKA Jameson, is a great character. I loved reading about Jameson's family dynamics.
Everything went too smoothly--it wasn't realistic, but it was a good read. I would be willing to read more in the series.

Patchwork Family Romance

I received my copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I am a SUCKER for the bleeding heart romances - like absolute sucker, and this story delivers! Lily didn't have the most loving of childhood relationships with her parents. In fact, the closest thing to a motherly bond that she had was with her sister Tessa who was only two years her senior. You see from the start that Lily isn't bitter because of her past, she's strong - courageous and determined - and she dreams of helping others. She takes in strays, but instead of stray cats she takes in stray people - teenage girls who have been abused and mistreated, living on the streets and in need of a little love and a safe place to stay. Lily seems to have just accepted that she doesn't have time for love, until Mario Jameson Perez shows up and guess what... HE HAS A HEART AS BIG AS HERS!

I loved that Jameson (or Mario, whatever you want to call him) became a support, a champion. He wasn't fighting her battles for her, but he was there to help her fight them. He became devoted to her and her cause (that he already worked with troubled teens was a big plus!!!!) and her girls in just the right amount of time. Nothing felt too rushed, it all seemed just right even though not that much time had passed between the day they met and the day they married. Whirlwind and once in a lifetime. I'm a sucker for it... COMPLETE SUCKER!

I resented every moment I had to put this down, in fact I have already bought and jumped into the next book in the series which is Tessa's love story. The pace felt right, the almost fairy tale tropes felt right, this story just feels right! If you're looking for a fun little read, pick this one up. It's hopeful and heartwarming and everything that you'd imagine it to be.

Clearly the Oxford Textbook of clinical Hepatology belongs in teavching libraries. Those with liver transplant programs or gastrointestinal or hepatology training require both sets. If only one were to be purchased, my choice would be schiff, it more clearly sets forthb U.S. standards of
practice.

Basic Medical Histology

Kessel's Basic Medical Histology is much more than an overview of the microscopic structure of the human body. Yes, as one should expect, he examines all of the various cell structures, cell types and tissues. The descriptions of the microscopic structure are supported by both diagrams and color photomicrographs. However, the best part of this book is the range of transmission and scanning electron micrographs illustrating the ultrastructure of human cells and cell associations. These figures along with line drawings act as a foundation for the author's discussion of many important physiological processes that occur at the molecular and microscopic levels. This book is a valuable resource for students heading toward a clinical profession and interested in understanding the fundamental physiological activities in the human body.

Excellent text for histology students

This book gives great explanations on the differences between specific types of epithelium. The pictures in this book facilitate learning at an easier level. In this way, I found this book to be a great help in my medical histology class. My study partner and I also used the following which is on amazon:

This study guide was great because it showed us all the possible kinds of questions that could be asked on our medical histology exams. We both got very high grades with the help of these 2 books. It's a decent read, but don't go out of your way to get this

I guess for $16 it's a decent read, but it's one of those examples of a story which a good idea as the premise, but a not so entertaining follow-through of that idea. Has some good and fun moments, but I don't think the overall story is as good as it could have been. Quite honestly, the 22 minute episode of the same name from the Batman Brave and the Bold cartoon (which is loosely based off of this comic), did a better job of telling a story. If you're interested in the premise, go seek out that episode of the same name of this story.

Twist, Dig, and Drill: A Book About Srews

I love this book and the others in the set! I teach 2nd Grade Science and used this set while teaching simple machines. The books are easy to understand, list many examples of the simple machine being discussed, and are colorful and inviting. The fact that it lists every day items that children are familiar with really helps them to better understand the simple machine it is describing. The end of each book includes an activity to explain how the simple machine is used, fun facts about that simple machine, and a glossary. Each book also includes a list of related books and web sites to continue the study and increase the curiosity of the simple machine being discussed. I highly recommend them all!

Before he was Santa, Nicholas St. North led an exciting life full of daring adventures. William Joyce interviews the future Mr. Claus about his past, the other Guardians, and what he thinks of the cast of colorful characters that live at the North Pole.

William Joyce: When you were younger, where did you think you'd end up?

Nicholas St. North: Well, they didn't have Las Vegas when I was a kid. Or Disney World, so those just weren't an option. I'm kidding. KIDDING. But the North Pole? Never saw myself there.

Joyce: How do you think you came across in my telling of your story?

Nick St. North: Much better than I expected, to be honest, and since I'm Santa Claus I am, you know, I'm always honest. Your portrayal of me is you know, balanced. You got the good me and the ... wild me. I'm certainly jolly and you caught that. And the temper thing ... you didn't shy away from that. And the bravery and the fun. The fun me. I liked that. Because I'm, you know, fun. FUN! A fun guy.

Joyce: Could you tell us a little about the Guardians of Childhood?

Nick St. North: Great group. The best. Really. So glad to be a member. Sandman, Man in the Moon, Tooth Fairy, the Egg guy, that Frost kid ... just terrific. We all have our own thing, but we work together very, very well. Fighting the Boogeyman, Pitch is his real name. Not many people know that. But, yeah, I think we do a lotta good work together.

Joyce: Which Guardian would you choose to stand beside you in the thick of battle?

Nick St. North: Oh ... now. That's, that's, you know ... They are all, ALL great in their own way. All so talented. Geniuses! I mean it! Even, you know, the egg guy.

Joyce:What do you think makes you such a great Guardian?

Nick St. North: Oh, that's ... No ... I can't ... you're so kind ... Look, I just try to be the best Santa I can be. Firm. Friendly, but fair. That's sort of the motto.

Joyce: If you had a chance to change one thing in your past, would you? What would it be?

Nick St. North: You know, I ... Can we just not go there?

Joyce: If you could learn one bug or animal language, what would it be?

Nick St. North: Gosh. I know almost all of them. That's how I get a lot of my info on the naughty or nice thing. Pets are usually very reliable for that. I speak fluent hamster, which is good, because hamsters, they know EVERYTHING. I even speak leech. Which isn't much help really. There are some Irish accents I have trouble with. I love how they sound, but I need subtitles if it's a movie. And the Jersey Shore kids. Can't understand a word.

Joyce: How are the elves to work with?

Nick St. North: Well, we are all old, old friends. We've known each other since day one. But, honestly, I wish they were a little taller.

Joyce: Taller, you say?

Nick St. North: Yes. They get stepped on A LOT. Especially by the Yeti. It gets messy.

Joyce: Yeti? You mean Abominable Snowmen?

Nick St. North: "Abominable" is not the preferred designation. As native Himalayans, they prefer "Yeti" or Abominable Snowperson.

Joyce: So you have Abominable Snowpersons working at the North Pole?

Nick St. North: Oh yes! They actually do most of the toy development and construction. Which I am still, like, amazed by. I mean their fingers are huge, HUGE. Big as bean bag chairs. But they can do detail work! All the little stuff--eyes on dolls, you name it. They're also awesome warriors, super tidy and excellent at baking. Their cookies? Outta control and Low Cal.

Joyce: What about the elves? They don’t do toys?

Nick St. North: No, no, no, no. That's a huge misconception. The elves just play with the toys as sort of market testing ... to see if they're, you know, fun. Otherwise they're just sort of custodial ... sweeping, mopping. Oh! And they do party decorations and caroling. 20,000 elves singing 'Oh, Christmas Tree'? I get teary just talking about it.

Joyce: What do you think would have happened to you if you weren't chosen to be a Guardian?

Nick St. North: Definitely not retail or politics. They're too, too, I don't know ... pushy. I've always liked gardening. Landscape architect? Or social work? Or maybe directing. Features only. No TV.

Joyce: How would you most like to be remembered?

Nick St. North: Probably the whole Christmas Day thing. And my work with reindeer. Proud of that. And the kids. Yeah. My work with the kids, that's the biggie.

About the Author
William Joyce has put his personal stamp on all types of children’s media. His books include the New York Times bestseller The Man in the Moon, Nicholas St. North and the Battle of the Nightmare King, E. Aster Bunnymund and the Warrior Eggs at the Earth’s Core!, and Santa Calls. He’s won three Emmy awards for his Rolie Polie Olie animated series, developed character concepts for Toy Story and A Bug’s Life, and made films including Robots and Meet the Robinsons. He’s currently executive producer of the DreamWorks Animation release of Rise of the Guardians (Fall 2012) inspired by his new series. He is also producing The Leaf Men, based on his book The Leaf Men. And his star continues to rise—he’s been nominated for an Academy Award for his innovative short film The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore. Beautifully written enchanted story

My eight year old son and five year old daughter absolutely loved this book. They said the details in the story allowed them to have a vivid understanding of what was happening in the story and really evision the scenes. Once we started, they didn't want to stop. It created for several late night reads (past bedtime) as they just couldn't stop reading because they wanted to know what happened next. Excellent book.

Engaging story in an unusual setting

This enchanting tale glitters with the magic of the far north. An ancient evil has been unleashed on the unsuspecting village of Santoff Claussen: the evil Nightmare King and his army of Fearlings have come to steal the dreams of innocent children and replace them with terrors of the night. It's up to the learned wizard Ombric, his young protégé Katherine, and the swashbuckling theif-turned-hero Nicholas St. North (who will one day be known as Santa Claus) to save the day.

The story unfolds in a world of magic and wonder, but as fantasy worlds go it's a surprising and unusual one. There are aspects that are recognizable as our own world: the village of Santoff Claussen is set in old Russia, a battle takes place in the Himalayas, and the characters are familiar with Leonardo da Vinci. At the same time, it's a fairy tale world, full of wizards from Atlantis, protective moonbeams, fighting fireflies, and benevolent bears. The fairy tale world blends with science fiction when space travel and talking robots arrive on the scene. Not to mention the fact that Santa Claus and the Man in the Moon make an appearance. It's an engaging and interesting world, but an odd mix of genres.

The tale is filled with action and adventure, and good triumphs over evil. Themes of friendship, imagination, and facing one's fear are strong in the book. While at times the plot and setting seem a bit forced, it's overall an enjoyable read.

He would make a mechanical man of magic-a robot djinni that would do wonders, but only when commanded. ... Clean! Help the children with their studies... What could be wrong with that? As for Ombric, he'd keep a watchful eye on his apprentice, but in truth, he was glad to have North distracted and even gladder at how North occupied the children.... They had only checked him, like players in a game of chess. And the old wizard knew that the game is far from over."
