Stop Caretaking the Borderline or Narcissist: How to End the Drama and Get On with Life, by Margalis Fjelstad

People with Borderline or Narcissistic Personality Disorders have a serious mental illness that primarily affects their intimate, personal, and family relationships. Often they appear to be normally functioning at work and in public interactions, and Narcissists may even be highly effective, in the short term, in some work or social situations. However, in intimate relationships, they can be emotional, aggressive, demeaning, illogical, paranoid, accusing, and controlling—in the extreme. Their ability to function normally or pleasantly can suddenly change in an instant, like flipping a switch. These negative behaviors don’t happen once in a while, they happen almost continuously in their intimate relationships and most often, and especially with their Caretaker family member.

Here, Margalis Fjelstad describes how people get into a Caretaker role with a Borderline or Narcissist, and how they can get out. Caretakers give up their sense of self to become who and what the Borderline or Narcissist needs them to be. This compromises the Caretaker’s self-esteem, distorts their thinking processes, and locks them into a Victim-Persecutor-Rescuer pattern with the Borderline or Narcissist. The book looks at the underlying rules and expectations in these relationships and shows Caretaker’s how to move themselves out of these rigid interactions and into a healthier, more productive, and positive lifestyle—with or without the Borderline/Narcissistic partner or family member. It describes how to get out of destructive interactions with the Borderline or Narcissist and how to take new, more effective actions to focus on personal wants, needs, and life goals while allowing the Borderline or Narcissist to take care of themselves. It presents a realistic, yet compassionate, attitude toward the self-destructive nature of these relationships, and gives real life examples of how individuals have let go of their Caretaker behaviors with creative and effective solutions.

Review
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Fjelstad´s book and I found it informative, exciting, and above all very well written. Fjelstad is truly honest and frank about the fact that the borderline and narcissist are mentally ill and unwilling to change. She is open about the fact that caretakers too get something from the situation and that it is up to them to break the cycle of caretaking since the BP or NP is not going to change their ways. Fjelstad's advice is well thought out and practical which makes them easier to follow and she provides the reader with specific ideas and examples to how the caretaker can make the changes needed to rid themselves of the power that the BP or NP has over them. . . . [T]he book is excellent material for anyone that is living with or has any involvement with a BP or a NP, close or distant, since the book fosters understanding of the disorders and the need of the caretaker. The book can be of great use to psychology student, especially those in clinical psychology or those focusing on personality disorders. (Metapsychology Online Reviews)

Stop Caretaking the Borderline or Narcissist is refreshingly no-nonsense, provides lots of useful hints on how to put this self-care model into practice while at the same time informing thoroughly and in no uncertain terms about the BP/NP's view of the world. It is a most helpful book! (Addiction / Sucht / Adicción)

One of the Best!
By Mary
This book was like reading about several people in my life AND my interactions with them. It further solidified my dawning awareness that these people will not change (not easily and maybe not at all and maybe never). It validated many of my feelings and experiences related to dealing with the BPD & NPD. It gave me HOPE that my life can improve...BUT it will be up to me to make it happen for myself. Waiting for them to care, be kind, share, reciprocate, show empathy, be helpful, be responsible, be less crazy/angry/needy/manipulative is a waste of my time and my life. The author gives many suggestions for what I can do to make my situation better - very helpful as my boundaries have been bludgeoned by the BPD and NPD people for pretty much all of my life. Duh, hello. Why did I not realize all of this on my own many years before? My own thinking was not as clear as it would have been if I had not been subjected all my life to the BPD/NPD authority figures & significant others. The author lays out some very helpful guidelines about my responsibilities vs my caretaking behaviors. It feels like permission to just be a responsible, nice, caring person rather than take on the job of making all these crazy people happy!! Woohoo! I have a long way to go, but the path is a lot more clear after reading this book.

This is worth 10 Stars!
By She
Having been raised in a family with a borderline/narcissist mother, and an enabling father, I have been in denial most of my life about how dysfunctional our life was. This book has forced my eyes open in a way that 7 years with my therapist could not do. Granted, as a recovering Caretaker, I was ready to hear the whole truth about how dysfunctional I had become and how much work is ahead of me to fix myself and not the other people in my life, but this book got into every nook and cranny of dysfunction and called it what it was. I am shocked at all the connections I never made and dismayed at how much I still need to change but I am going to do the hard work ahead. Dysfunction has affected at least 4 generations, I want the buck to stop with me so my kids have a better role model.

Excellent, insightful, and to the point
By GJ
This book offers clear insights without delving into the author's past or too many case studies. It provides understanding of the BP/NP personalities as well as the Caretaker's, and why we are inclined to get hooked into these toxic relationships. It gives clear and hopeful advice to Caretakers on how to extricate themselves from a borderline/narcissist, and gives a clear picture of the importance of doing so. This is one of the most USEFUL self-help guides I have read in a long time! I originally borrowed it from a local library but found it so helpful I wanted to own my own copy.
(As for the one star review, the grammatical mistake is only in the web write-up and is corrected on the book flap. The grammar and writing is strong throughout without being too pedantic or technical. A reminder that one should actually read a book before reviewing it.)

The Bookman's Tale: A Novel of Obsession, by Charlie Lovett

Guaranteed to capture the hearts of everyone who truly loves books, The Bookman's Tale is a former bookseller's sparkling novel and a delightful exploration of one of literature's most tantalizing mysteries with echoes of Shadow of the Wind and A.S. Byatt's Possession.

Hay-on-Wye, 1995. Peter Byerly isn't sure what drew him into this particular bookshop. Nine months earlier, the death of his beloved wife, Amanda, had left him shattered. The young antiquarian bookseller relocated from North Carolina to the English countryside, hoping to rediscover the joy he once took in collecting and restoring rare books. But upon opening an 18th-century study of Shakespeare forgeries, Peter is shocked when a portrait of Amanda tumbles out of its pages. Of course, it isn't really her. The watercolor is clearly Victorian. Yet the resemblance is uncanny, and Peter becomes obsessed with learning the picture's origins.

As he follows the trail back first to the Victorian era and then to Shakespeare's time, Peter communes with Amanda's spirit, learns the truth about his own past, and discovers a book that might definitively prove Shakespeare was, indeed, the author of all his plays.

All of this in one book? Yep!
By Genevieve Kazdin
Oh MY! This is a book for book lovers, collectors, book historians, researchers and those who enjoy a good story. Everyone seems to have written a summary of the plot, so I won't. What you will find here is a mystery, a love story, some book history, and chances are good you will not work out the whodunit until the very end of the book. (Or even when it was done!!) Lovett surely did his research for this story - and that just adds to making the story so readable. It does ring true -- as though these things could indeed have happened. I did find some problems -- at least for me. The final solution does seem a bit contrived, although by that time the reader really doesn't mind. And although Lovett generously thanks his editor, I do wish that reliance on spell checkers was not used for quality books. Folks, 'I' is not a proper substitute for 'a'. No matter what some software will tell you, please read the manuscript. This is a marvelous read for a summer afternoon. And likely for a winter day -- or when Autumn leaves fall -- oh I did enjoy this book and hope you will as well.

A good read mired with predictable plot twists and excessive coincidences
By dianaers
The Bookman's Tale: A Novel of Obsession is a lot of things. It's a love story, mystery, thriller, all combined into one book. Peter Byerly, a socially awkward antiquarian book seller, is still reeling from the death of his beloved wife, Amanda. To escape, he goes to England, hoping to rejoin life by immersing himself in his first love, books. He happens to come across a watercolor portrait of Amanda while browsing through an old book. The thing of it is, though, is that the painting was done a hundred years prior. Driven by obsession, he steals the picture and finds himself in pursuit of who BB (the artist) and the person in the painting are, while stumbling upon a manuscript that could very well prove that Shakespeare actually wrote his plays.

This book had some pretty good selling points for me. Obsession? Bibliophila? SOLD! I found it to be well written and really interesting. Lovett draws from his own personal experience in the antiquarian book business, and it is very clear that he knows his subject matter. The descriptions of how books are restored and about forgery are in depth and very comprehensible to someone that has no idea about any of that stuff. I really liked how he drew his inspiration from actual documents (such as Shakespeare's Pandosto) and people, yet do not forget that this is primarily fiction.

The story shifts between three different stories: present day (or rather, the 1990s), the mid 1980s (Peter and Amanda's love story), and the early 1600s-late 1800s (the story of the Pandosto manuscript, the "Holy Grail" of English literature). The time periods are easily discernable as they are all labeled before it moves into that particular segment. While well written, I found that because of so many story lines, when one would peak, it would shift to another time period where something slow may be going on. Or, it would stop in the middle of something captivating, and shift to another story. I'm not a fan of that kind of device. It's not nearly as bad as a cliffhanger ending, but still....

While I enjoy plot twists, the author is excessive with them, and most of them are pretty predictable. The same goes with the coincidences. There are too many coincidences to be credible, and I felt that because of them, it was kind of a lazy attempt to wrap everything up neatly with a big, pretty bow.

The love story between Amanda and Peter is very sweet and believable, but I can't really say that I connected or felt anything for them. As far as the Shakespeare angle, I've never been too interested in the theories that his works were actually written by others; that is a very big part in this book.

Interesting in premise and execution, but because of the predictability and excess concurrences, I wasn't completely in love with The Bookman's Tale. That's not to say that I wouldn't recommend it, but it's definitely for people who are fascinated with the antique book trade and William Shakespeare.

This bibliographic detective story was a delight that kept me up into the wee small hours
By Maine Colonial
Our protagonist, Peter Byerly, is a young bookseller who caught the bibliophile bug at (the fictional) Ridgefield University in North Carolina. A scholarship boy with crippling shyness, his preferred work/study job was in the library, because he wouldn't have to interact with anyone. And yet that is where he meets the two great loves of his life: rare books and Amanda.

The story actually begins with Peter recently widowed, Amanda having died suddenly after they'd been married only six years. Heartbroken, Peter has fled North Carolina for the cottage in Kingham, Oxfordshire, England that he and Amanda had bought the year before.

Now, months later, Peter decides slowly to return to his antiquarian book hunter/seller work. In Hay-on-Wye, the renowned city of bookshops in Wales, he discovers a portrait of Amanda slipped inside an old volume. But it can't be Amanda, because this is a Victorian-era portrait. The discover electrifies Peter. He must find out where this portrait came from.

A request to evaluate a local Kingham resident's manor-house collection of antiquarian books leads Peter on a quest for what he calls the Holy Grail: proof that William Shakespeare really was the author of all those plays and sonnets, rather than Marlowe, de Vere, Bacon or one of the other better-educated writers often claimed to be the more likely source.

Peter's two quests become a thrilling adventure, especially for readers fascinated by old books and their travels through time and the lives of their owners. Each chapter tells one of three stories: Peter's modern-day (1995) pursuits, his life with Amanda and the chequered past of the grail book. The three yarns wind around each other skillfully, each part adding extra richness to the others, then converging in a deliciously satisfying way.

When I turned the last page of The Bookman's Tale, I was shocked to see it was 1:30am. Now it's nearly 3:00am and I'm savoring more time with the book as I write this review. I'm a morning person; I'm usually asleep before 11:00pm and I can't remember the last time I've been up past midnight. But it never occurred to me to think about the time while reading this tremendously enjoyable bibliographic detective story. I'm not going to claim it's high art, and hard-core crime fiction readers will probably figure out the whodunnit side of the tale fairly early on, but it's terrific, old-fashioned entertainment.

The moonlight that poured over the mountaintop hotel gave it an ethereal, mysterious quality. From one perspective it looked enticing, welcoming. From Charley's perspective, the shadows it cast spelled danger. The moonlight shouldn't be silver. It should be red.

But this was no time for imagined threats. She was here for one purpose and one purpose only.

Taking a fortifying deep breath, she waited for the barrier to rise then drove through and parked in the main car park. No valet approached to whisk her Fiat 500 off to the secure parking area filled with Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Maseratis and the like.

Ambient music greeted her in the sprawling lobby where hotel guests were lounging around in their finery sipping on pre- and post-dinner drinks. She didn't make eye contact with anyone, intent on slipping through to the function room at the back.

The closer her steps took her, the louder the thuds of her heart grew. By the time she reached the door, the beats inside her were so loud the ambient music was completely drowned out.

A barrel of a man materialised, preventing her entry into the room.

'Your invitation, please,' he said, holding out his hand. 'My husband arrived earlier,' she answered in hesitant Spanish. She'd lived in the country for over five years but only in recent months did she feel she'd got an actual grip on the language. She still kept her phrasebook in her handbag just in case. 'He left word that I would be getting here late,' she lied. 'Your husband?'

Charley reached into her silver clutch bag, removed her passport and handed it over. 'Raul Cazorla.' She imagined how her soon-to-be ex-husband would react if he were in this situation and tried to channel some of his arrogance. She held her phone up. 'Would you like me to call him so he can come and verify who I am?'

She could see the guard debating what to do. No doubt he had taken Raul's invitation himself. No doubt he had clocked the flame-haired lingerie model on his arm too.

Thinking of that lingerie model…

A host of bitter feelings curdled in Charley's belly, just as they had two weeks ago when the first picture of the happy couple had been spread on the cover of one of Spain's highend glossies. Raul had looked like the cat who'd licked the bowl dry of all the cream, which Charley supposed wasn't all that surprising. Physically, Jessica was perfect.

She doubted the model was his first lover since she'd left, just the first he'd publicly acknowledged.

Who he saw was none of her business, she reminded herself. In a few short weeks their divorce would be finalised. He would be a free agent.

She inhaled deeply and narrowed her eyes, little signs she had seen Raul perform hundreds of times to denote his displeasure at whatever situation was occurring. 'Perhaps you would prefer to find him yourself and ask him to confirm who I am?'

She knew her words had done the trick when the guard placed his hand on the door to admit her. Who wanted to be the man to seek out Raul Cazorla, one of Spain's richest men, in the middle of a high-society party, to ask him if the woman bearing his name really was his wife?

'Enjoy the party,' he said, opening the door.

The function room of Barcelona's Hotel Garcia was a mass of glitz and silver and heaving with glamorous bodies. Unlike the easy jazz music of the lobby, here a DJ was playing a set, popular dance music throbbing beneath her already aching feet. It had been nearly two years since she'd last worn high heels and all the bones in her feet were protesting.

Waiters and waitresses armed with trays of champagne and hors d'oeuvres mingled discreetly, but close enough for Charley to swipe a flute of champagne and drink it in one swallow.

As she scoured the room she became aware of curious eyes watching her, imagined she could hear the whispers of, 'Is that Charlotte…?'

She tuned them out, focusing her attention on the open French doors that led out into the expansive gardens and the balmy night air.

The garden was alive with revellers sitting on the many iron tables and chairs scattered over the lawn, people talking, smoking, kissing…

Her heart recognised him first, accelerating to a gallop as she spotted the tall, muscular frame standing in the far distance, his back to her, a hand in his pocket. He was deep in conversation with a man she didn't recognise. On the table beside them sat two women chatting between themselves. The redhead took a long drag of a cigarette.

Raul hates smoking, she thought faintly.

For a horrible moment she thought she was going to be sick.

She'd barely taken a step when he turned his head as if sensing eyes upon him.

He tilted his face a touch in her direction then turned back to the gentleman he was talking to and carried on his conversation.

Gathering all her courage, Charley began to walk. She'd only taken a few steps when he turned his head again. This time his eyes fixed directly on her.

He twisted his body round fully to face her.

As she neared him he became more than just a figure in the distance. Step by step he seemed to expand and flesh out, becoming solid. Becoming Raul.

He was as handsome as her tortured mind remembered.

Dimly she noted the dark hair cropped short, the black bow tie loosened around his neck, the perfectly tailored handmade suit hugging his snake hips.

By the time she reached the table, all conversation between his companions had stopped. In particular, she could feel the redhead's eyes boring into her.

'Hello, Raul,' Charley said softly, the anger that had propelled her to gatecrash this party diminishing as she took in the face she had last seen in the flesh almost two years ago.

If her appearance shocked him, he hid it well. He'd always been able to hide his emotions well. Apart from in the bedroom.

'Charlotte,' he said, leaning forward to place a kiss on both her cheeks. 'This is an unexpected pleasure.'

At least, those were the words his mouth said. His eyes spoke a different tale. Even through the tingling on her cheek where his lips had met her skin, she could see the fire spitting from them.

When he next spoke she could hear the tightness of his vocal cords. 'Excuse me, Andres, ladies.' With those polite parting words, he bore her away, taking hold of her arm and clasping it tightly enough to prevent her escaping but not so hard as to hurt.

Eyes followed them as they walked in silence to the far corner of the garden, the part where discreet benches were placed amongst the blooming flowers for lovers to be alone. With every step she took, Charley forced her mind to concentrate, to remember the words she'd spent the day rehearsing.

Being here with him was a thousand times harder than she'd imagined it would be.

The last time she'd seen her husband had been exactly six hundred and thirty-three days ago.

The last time she'd seen her husband they'd been screaming at each other, real hate and fury spilling out like a bunch of fireworks detonating in one big bang. She'd left that night and hadn't seen him since.

She'd thought all the hurt and anger from that evening and everything that had led up to it had gone, that she was over it and moving on with her life. To feel the same maelstrom of emotions stirring within her scared her more than anything she'd experienced since that night.

She could feel him trying to rein in his own fury too, in subtle ways that only someone who'd been intimate with him for a long time would recognise. Someone like his wife.

Only when they were safely out of sight, hidden behind a cherry tree laden with fruit, did he drop her arm and glower down at her. 'What are you doing here, Charlotte?'

'I'm here to speak to you.'

'That much is obvious. The question is why have you wormed your way into this party when I've made it clear I have no wish to see you?'

His words shouldn't feel like a slap to the face. But they did. They stung as badly as his refusal to take her calls and as badly as when he'd cancelled the appointment she'd made to see him less than an hour after his PA had put it in his diary. Charley had heard the mortification in Ava's voice when she'd called her back with the bad news.

'I need your help,' she said with a helpless shrug, gazing intently into the pale blue eyes she'd once adored. The very first time she'd caught a glimpse of him it had felt as if her heart expanded enough to consume the rest of her. The high cheekbones, the full lips offset by a firm jaw.

She blinked and looked away. Raul's intense masculinity that bordered on beauty had turned her brain to mush before. She needed to keep her head together, not plunge back five years to a time when her libido did her thinking for her. This was her one chance to convince him to help her. 'Did you get my letter and the finance report I put with it?'

His throat emitted a sound of disgust. 'Are you talking about the begging letter I received a couple of days ago?'

She rubbed an eye and immediately wished she hadn't. She'd spent an age applying her make-up, unpractised after almost two years of not wearing it, and in one frustrated rub had probably ruined it. But she needed to look the part, not just to gain access to the party but to convince Raul to take her pleas seriously. Image was everything to her estranged husband. Regardless of what occurred behind closed doors, the public face had to be perfect.

'So you've read it?'

Raul had taken one look at the girlish handwriting on the envelope and known immediately who it was from. Charley's writing was undeveloped, as if she were stuck at age twelve.

It suddenly struck him that her handwriting was something she'd always been embarrassed about. She must have been really desperate to get in touch with him in this manner.

At the time he'd received her letter, though, he hadn't been thinking of anything like that. Seeing her handwriting there before him had hit him low in his gut, churning up so many emotions he'd screwed the envelope into a tight ball and thrown it at the wall. A good hour had passed before he'd retrieved it and taken a look at the content of her letter. He'd barely got a third of the way through before screwing it back up again. The finance report—and he used that term loosely—had gone straight in the shredding pile.

'I read enough to know you're after more of my money.' He'd transferred ten million euros into her account not long after she'd left, a reminder to her of everything she was giving up. He'd fully expected her to come crawling back. He'd still been expecting her to come crawling back a year later when the divorce papers had landed on his doorstep.

But now those millions had dried up and here she was, dressed to the nines, trying to get her greedy hands on more.

'I'm not after your money. Did you read the bit about the Poco Rio day care centre?'

'Yes.' It was as far as he'd got before the words had blurred in his eyes.

Poco Rio day care centre. Those five words had been the reason his hands had fisted the letter into a ball the second time. It had been his estranged wife's refusal to have a child with him that had killed their marriage.

He'd pumped an endless supply of money into her failed business ventures and now she had the nerve to ask him for money to fund yet another business, this one involving children, when she'd strung him along for three years with the promise of one.

He'd never thought of her as a sadist.

'Then you know how important this is. I've found the ideal premises but the owner won't hold onto them for ever. Either I complete the sale in the next month or he's pulling out. Please, Raul, there isn't time to find new premises. We've got four months left until we're kicked out of our current home and—'

'None of this concerns me. This is your problem.'

'But I'm running out of time! The place I've found is perfect. The grounds are enormous and, once all the renovations are done, the building itself will be ten times better than the one we're currently in and we'll be able to double the number of children.'

'As I said, this is your concern, not mine.'

'But without you I can't get the rest of the funding. I've tried everything…'

'Then try harder. Maybe this time you'll actually see something through to the end rather than giving up halfway through.'

She sucked in her cheeks at his home truth but met his gaze head-on. 'I won't give up this time. I can't. But no one's prepared to invest.'

'Then either your business plan needs working on or you need to change your résumé. Maybe you should consider changing the truth into lies and hope no one bothers to check it.' He backed away and nodded his head. 'I've given you enough of my time—my date will be feeling neglected. I trust you can see yourself out?'

She blanched at the mention of his date.

He waited for gratification to hit him but all he felt was something akin to guilt, although why that should be the case he couldn't begin to fathom. Charley had left him. After three years of his lavishing his money on her, helping her to improve herself, supporting her, giving her everything she desired…she'd refused him a child.

After three years of stringing him along, dangling the promise of a child over his head, she'd finally admitted the truth. She didn't want to have his baby.

Their whole marriage had been a lie, reduced to nothing but a cauldron of recrimination and hate.

And now she had the nerve to ask for his help.

Yet, staring at her now, her skin as pure as alabaster under the moonlight, Raul had to clench his hands into fists and hold them tightly to his sides to prevent them reaching out to touch her.

The first time he'd met her, he'd just taken over the running of the Cazorla Hotel chain, the family business run by his father until he'd suffered a major stroke. Despite having his own successful, unconnected business to run, Raul had stepped up to the plate and taken over. The stroke had left his father physically disabled and unable to speak but he'd perfectly conveyed the disgust he felt at this occurrence. Raul had known it was the thought of him taking over rather than his new physical situation his father had hated the most. He knew his father despised the roaring success he'd made of the business since.

Beautifully written....

This is the best story by the writer. The plot is so well thought out and the characters are brilliantly portrayed. The writer has brought out the hs insecurities and sensitively described them.
the reader is compelled to empathise with her. The H has his own insecurities and once they begin to talk to each other they are able to move forward.
The epilogue rounds up the story well and makes this book a very satisfying experience.

Freaking Fantastic
By TashNz
The Perfect Cazorla Wife is a perfect Harlequin Presents and also where they have perfectly named the story. It’s been a long six hundred and thirty three days since Charley has seen her still gorgeous husband Raul and he’s not pleased to see her when she gatecrashes a party to corner him. Begging for his financial help with her latest venture we catch a glimpse into the previous life Charley and Raul shared. From the moment he claimed her he did all he could to change her into the perfect wife, one that would fit into his world. He humored her by financing all her past hair-brained adventures and the last thing he wanted to do now was fund anything more. He sends his ex wife packing!

Two days later Raul offers Charley her much needed lifeline. In exchange for gifting her the money she desperately needs, Raul tells Charley he expects her to return home and live as his wife for four months, or until such time the renovations on the daycare Charley is trying to save is complete.

Brilliantly timed flashbacks paint a grim picture of two people from completely opposite worlds. There is no doubt they loved each other only Raul’s thinking spending millions on his wife to change her into the perfect wife was showing love and Charley loved his world and trying to change at first but as we all know there comes a time when we have to be ourselves. How refreshing it was to not have to introduce herself as Charlotte anymore.

I adore second chance stories and The Perfect Cazorla Wife was a perfect example of two people coming back together, learning what really matters and going forth with compromise and genuine love. Charley was a fantastic character who despite everything that was stacked against her decided it was time to stay true to herself (loved her outfit for their first outing together). Raul was the perfect alpha who really needed taking down a peg or two and with Charley’s help, he learnt what is really important in life. I loved how he grew in character.

I adored the writing. First line: The moonlight that poured over the mountaintop hotel gave it an ethereal, mysterious quality. Beautiful beginning setting the scene. By the time she reached the door, the beats inside her were so loud the ambient music was completely drowned out. Fantastic imagery. Reasons I always look forward to Michelle Smart’s stories is her fantastic imagery in setting the scene, fantastic dialogue, making me feel emotion and in making me get lost in the characters world which included the Spanish way of life and festivals.

A brilliant read, a moving read and perfect Presents story and I must also give a shout out to the cover!

Genre: Romance
this is a shortish read at around 2000 kindle locations ( about 220-40 pages I’d guess) but covers a couple of months so that works for me. I do like a romance that’s given time to play out properly.
Charley – well, when I first looked at her from Raul’s POV I didn’t like her. She seems nice and yet he says she was a gold digger, just wanted the spa days, the designer clothes and jewels and refused to have his child. He even supported her through three business start ups that she just got bored with and let fail. She seems a flake, so how come when we see her from the other side she’s nice, even though all that he says seems true? Well, once we get to know her and see why she acted that way – the clothes etc were her trying to fit his world, she came from a 2 bed flat she shared with her mum, her dad had another family and let her down all the while and she just didn’t feel she fitted in properly. The businesses too have another side to them, and in all we can see that Charley just felt that she was never good enough, that she subjugated herself in an attempt to fit in. How could she bring a baby into that? She still loves Raul though, even though she hates how they were together. Now she needs his help and his money...
Raul is actually a really nice man, but his past has shaped him and his actions in just the way Charley’s has affected her. Now they are together again for a few months, and they can see each other differently, and maybe reassess their views. They still have the same steam between them – that’s something that hasn’t changed and they don’t want it to. Its a question of can they find a way to be together now – have they learned from their previous failure?
Its a fun read, was good seeing just how much Charley changed when she had to rely on herself and didn’t feel she was being unfairly judged. I liked that Raul finally opened his mind and could admit he was wrong about some things – it takes a big man to do that. Its pretty standard of this type of romance, no great surprises or dramas and one that’s easy to relax with.

Stars:Four, its a fun read, but a one off for me.
