Best book for pug owners
By pugged
We have owned a total of 7 pugs over the last 50 years and have fostered many more. This book should be required reading for all new pug owners as it tells you in simple language how to raise, care for, and love a pug. This book is not for pug breeders. If you want to know why, check your nearest pug rescue.

The Child As Musician: A Handbook of Musical Development (Oxford Handbooks)From Oxford University Press

The Child as Musician is an authoritative and comprehensive handbook of musical development from conception to late adolescence. Within 24 chapters by leading specialists, it celebrates the richness and diversity of the many different ways in which children can engage in and interact with music.

The 24 chapters have been organized according to five sections:

The first section (Development) examines the critical months and years from conception to the end of infancy. It looks at how the musical brain develops, ways of understanding musical development, and the nature of musicality.

Section two (Engagement) scrutinizes claims about the non-musical benefit of exposure to music, for example that music makes you smarter. This is followed by four thorough reviews of dealing with musical preference and taste, literacy, aesthetic identity and the perception of emotion in music.

Section three (Differences) focuses on those issues that help explain and identify individual differences. It includes chapters examining how children develop their motivation to study music, conceptions of giftedness and talent, and two chapters on music therapy. Five chapters cover skills that can develop as a result of exposure to music. It considers the informal activities associated with musical play and the use of computers and technology. There are also chapters dealing with the acquisition of vocal and instrumental skills, as well as the individual and social worlds of children's musical creativity.

The final section of the book discusses five different contexts: The chapter on historical perspectives provides readers with information that will assist them in making comparisons between how children have learned and developed their musical capacities in the past, with current opportunities. This is extended by two additional chapters that focus on children's involvement in music in non-western cultures.

Practical Text Mining and Statistical Analysis for Non-structured Text Data Applications brings together all the information, tools and methods a professional will need to efficiently use text mining applications and statistical analysis.

Winner of a 2012 PROSE Award in Computing and Information Sciences from the Association of American Publishers, this book presents a comprehensive how-to reference that shows the user how to conduct text mining and statistically analyze results. In addition to providing an in-depth examination of core text mining and link detection tools, methods and operations, the book examines advanced preprocessing techniques, knowledge representation considerations, and visualization approaches. Finally, the book explores current real-world, mission-critical applications of text mining and link detection using real world example tutorials in such varied fields as corporate, finance, business intelligence, genomics research, and counterterrorism activities.

The world contains an unimaginably vast amount of digital information which is getting ever vaster ever more rapidly. This makes it possible to do many things that previously could not be done: spot business trends, prevent diseases, combat crime and so on. Managed well, the textual data can be used to unlock new sources of economic value, provide fresh insights into science and hold governments to account. As the Internet expands and our natural capacity to process the unstructured text that it contains diminishes, the value of text mining for information retrieval and search will increase dramatically.

Review

"They’ve done it again. From the same industry leaders who brought you the "bible" of data mining comes the definitive, go-to text mining resource. This book empowers you to dig in and seize value, with over two dozen hands-on tutorials that drive an incredible range of applications such as predicting marketing success and detecting customer sentiment, criminal lies, writing authorship, and patient schizophrenia. These step-by-step tutorials immediately place you in the practitioner’s driver’s seat, executing on text analytics. Beyond this, 17 more chapters cover the latest methods and the leading tools, making this the most comprehensive resource, and earning it a well-deserved place on your desk aside the authors’ data mining handbook." --Eric Siegel, Ph.D., Founder, Predictive Analytics World, Text Analytics World and Prediction Impact, Inc.

"Of the number of statistics books that are published each year, only a few stand out as really being important, meaning that they positively influence how future research is done in the subject area of the text. I believe that Practical Text Mining is just such a book." --Joseph M. Hilbe, JD, PhD, Arizona State University and Jet Propulsion Laboratory

"When you want real help extracting insight from the mountains of text that you’re facing, this is the book to turn to for immediate practical advice." --Karl Rexer, PhD, President, Rexer Analytics, Boston, MA

"The underlying premise is that almost all data in databases takes the form of unstructured text, or summaries of unstructured text, and that historians, marketers, crime investigators, and others need to know how to search that text for meaningful patterns - a very different process than reading. Contributors in a range of fields share their insights and experience with the process. After setting out the principles, they present tutorials and case studies, then move on to advanced topics." --Reference and Research Book News, Inc.

"The authors of Practical Text Mining and Statistical Analysis for Nonstructured Text Data Applications have managed to produce three books in one. First, in 17 chapters they give a friendly yet comprehensive introduction to the huge field of text mining, a field comprising techniques from several different disciplines and a variety of different tasks. Miner and his colleagues have produced a readable overview of the area that is sure to help the practitioner navigate this large and unruly ocean of techniques. Second, the authors provide a comprehensive list and review of both the commercial and free software available to perform most text data mining tasks. Finally, and most importantly, the authors have also provided an amazing collection of tutorials and case studies. The tutorials illustrate various text mining scenarios and paths actually taken by researchers, while the case studies go into even more depth, showing both the methodology used and the business decisions taken based on the analysis. These practical step-by-step guides are impressive not only in the breadth of their applications but in the depth and detail that each case study delivers. The studies are authored by several guest authors in addition to the book authors and are built on real problems with real solutions. These case studies and tutorials alone make the book worth having. I have never seen such a collection of real business problems published in any field, much less in such a new field as text mining. These, together with the explanations in the chapters, should provide the practitioner wishing to get a broad view of the text mining field an invaluable resource for both learning and practice." --Richard De Veaux Professor of Statistics; Dept. of Mathematics and Statistics; Williams College

"In writing Practical Text Mining and Statistical Analysis for Nonstructured Text Data Applications, the six authors (Miner, Delen, Elder, Fast, Hill, and Nisbet) accepted the daunting task of creating a cohesive operational framework from the disparate aspects and activities of text mining, an emerging field that they appropriately describe as the "Wild West" of data mining. Tapping into their unique expertise and applying a wide cross-application lens, they have succeeded in their mission. Rather than listing the facets of text mining simply as independent academic topics of discussion, the book leans much more to the practical, presenting a conceptual road map to assist users in correlating articulated text mining techniques to categories of actual commonly observed business needs. To finish out the job, summaries for some of the most prevalent commercial text mining solutions are included, along with examples. In this way, the authors have uniquely presented a text mining resource with value to readers across that breadth of business applications." --Gerard Britton, J.D. V.P., GRC Analytics, Opera Solutions LLC

"Text Mining is one of those phrases people throw around as though it describes something singular. As the authors of Practical Text Mining and Statistical Analysis for Non-structured Text Data Applications show us, nothing could be further from the truth. There is a rich, diverse ecosystem of text mining approaches and technologies available. Readers of this book will discover a myriad of ways to use these text mining approaches to understand and improve their business. Because the authors are a practical bunch the book is full of examples and tutorials that use every approach, multiple commercial and open source tools, and that show the power and trade-offs each involves. The case studies are worked through in detail by the authors so you can see exactly how things would be done and learn how to apply it to your own problems. If you are interested in text mining, and you should be, this book will give you a perspective that is broad, deep and approachable." --James Taylor CEO Decision Management Solutions

What a huge disappointment!
By Ian K.
The early chapters of this book are misleading. They provide a decent overview of the issues in text minding, but nothing more. The rest of the book does not build on these chapters. Instead the later chapters are nothing more than user manuals or tutorials on software tools (mostly commercial products, not open source tools) to do text mining. Most of these chapters are taken up by screen shots of the tools and notations on what to do at various points (e.g., "click OK").

This is a huge disappointment. This book does not contain the information that you would need to know if you were to develop your own software tools. Nor does it have the utility of a book on combining existing software (i.e., class libraries in Java or R libraries) to create applications. This book is basically an MBA's guide to text mining. Even as an "idiots guide to text mining" this book is of questionable value, since the tools and software interfaces will change. New tools will soon be available and replace the ones in the book.

I've spent the last year using the R mathematics language. The section on R and text mining is completely inadequate.

At best this is an expensive book that has a short self-life. For people who are not software engineers but want to do text mining this book might be useful. However, for a software engineer, the book is of little use. I am very disappointed. I suppose that the fault is partially mine for not looking at the table of contents carefully enough.

In summary: if you are an MBA or marketing professional without a quantitative background (e.g., you can't write software) and you buy this book within a year or two of its publication, it might have some use to you since it provides an overview of a number of software products with instructions on their use.

If you're a software engineer or someone with a quantitative background (e.g., you can program in Java, R or MatLab or something similar) don't buy this book. It will be an almost complete waste of money.

Practical?
By Nikhil Murgai
I picked up a friends copy while visiting him and I wasn't surprised - part of the book wants to sell you stuff (commercial, expensive, not really needed software). There is an obligatory mention of R but nothing concrete, truly useful.

Do your self a favor and pick any of the Orielly or Manning publishers books on the subject. It's a lot more practical, a lot more applied and something you can start doing right now. I am sure Amazon recommendation would be on this page :).

If you are new to text mining and have a little bit of programming experience pick up 'Natural Language Processing with Python' aka the NLTK book. It does teach you basics of python and the fundamentals of Text Mining in a very fluid, step by step manner. For creating robust pipelines look into 'Taming Text'. It's Java based so a background on Java would help. Thirdly, as you gain experience in this stuff, I would recommend looking at Mallet from Andrew McCallum (U of Mass., Amherst) - it's a java library that can be used from the command line and also used in your own code. It is seriously cool.

I know Text Mining is hot and there are commercial 'tools' out there that promise you the world. Nice looking charts and summaries are fine if you are an executive; however, if you want to make decisions on data that make an impact, I'd serious recommend picking up Python/Java/R and use libraries available for those to build complete data pipelines. Train models based on your text data and desired outcome, use those models to make predictions on fresh data, and make this automatic.

BTW - if you want to see real life Text Mining in action, look no further than Google and Facebook. Hint: they never use the commercial, point and click stuff this book advertises.

Understanding the Bible, by Dr. John R.W. Stott

This book answers foundational questions: Who wrote the Bible? What is its message? Why is it thought to be a "holy" book? How does one read and interpret it? Best of all, though, you'll broaden your vision of Jesus Christ, the focal point of Scripture. How? By better understanding the geographical, religious, and historical concerns that shaped the world in which he lived. You'll see Jesus as never before: both as a man of his times and culture, and as the culmination of a divine providence that prepared the way for the ministry of the Messiah. Written by renowned preacher, writer, and apologist John Stott, this new, expanded edition includes - Questions at the beginning of each chapter to help you focus - New, up-to-date maps for the chapters on history and geography - An index to help you speedily access areas of interest.

Review
"It is doubtful if John STott has ever written any book of greater value." Christian Herald

From the Publisher
To apprehend Jesus in his fullness, writes world-renowned scholar John Stott, it is essential to understand the setting within which God offers him to us. He sent him to a particular place, at a particular time, and within a particular framework of truth. To new Christians as well as seasoned believers who want a fresh perspective, Understanding the Bible offers a strong grasp of the Bible's message and its focal point, Jesus Christ. New features in this edition include focus questions at the beginning of each chapter, new maps, and an index.

From the Author
John R. W. Stott is rector emeritus of All Souls Church in London and has a worldwide ministry as Bible expositor, conference speaker, and writer. His other books include Basic Christianity, Christ the Controversialist, and Understanding Christ

Grounding principles for sound exegesis.
By Wesley L. Janssen
". . . we must be ready for the text to penetrate our defenses, challenge our assumptions, disturb our complacency and judge our compromises. Otherwise, if we come to Scripture with our mind already made up, all we are likely to hear is the reassuring echoes of our own cultural prejudice." (p151)

This is a very helpful and enjoyable book, and I am a bit surprised that is has so far garnered only a few superficial reviews in this forum. Stott provides a well-paced and well-supported overview of the harmony and message of the Old and New Testaments, a look at their respective cultural contexts and provides three basic principles for interpreting the Bible. My hardcover volume also features maps, charts, and photographs, which enrich both understanding and enjoyment. As Stott says, "Just as in a children's treasure hunt, one is sometimes fortunate enough to stumble immediately upon the treasure but, more usually, has to follow laboriously from clue to clue until at last the treasure is found, so it is with Bible reading. . . But a painstaking pursuit of the clues will ultimately lead every reader to that treasure whose worth is beyond price." (p19, 20)

Near the end of the sixth chapter, explaining the authority of the Bible, Stott says: ". . . to accept the authority of the Bible is a Christian thing to do. It is neither a religious eccentricity, nor a case of discreditable obscurantism, but the good sense of Christian faith and humility. It . . . may be called the 'Christian' view precisely because it is Christ's view.
"To accept the divine origin of the Bible is not to pretend that there are no problems. To be candid, there are many problems . . ." He cites, as examples, the problems of pain and suffering, going on to say, ". . . it is essential that we wrestle honestly with biblical problems. It is not Christian to bury our heads in the sand, pretending that no problems exist. Nor is it Christian to manipulate Scripture in order to achieve a forced, artificial harmonization. No, we work at the problems with intellectual integrity. . . Jesus Christ taught it and exhibited it. . . To follow Christ is always sober, humble, Christian realism." (p135, 136)

The only dissenting comment I will muster is that I was slightly disappointed with Stott's casual dismissal of the exegetic works of Philo and Origen. Of course, I have seen this before. The complaints of their opponents are assumed without any attempt to give Philo and Origen their due consideration (page 146). As those who have actually read them will be aware, these expositors (and others of their approach, like Gregory of Nyssa, and to a lesser extent, Augustine) were intelligent, assiduous, exceptionally knowledgeable in both the text and the ancient philology, and centrally focused on reverence for both God and scripture. When Stott goes on to speak about "the general sense of Scripture" (i.e., "the principle of harmony") he addresses the great concern of both Philo and Origen. They did "meditate day and night" on God's Word, as the Psalm says, "like one who finds great spoil," that is, "gold" and "honey." One should not dismiss individuals who have proceeded to live this life while also holding up this type of a model for others. This is not to say Philo or Origen must be wholly accepted (neither of them asked to be, they were, after all, students of scripture in the purest sense), but on what serious basis can they be wholly dismissed?
However, all in all, it's a rather small complaint. As regards "the general sense" and harmony of scripture, Stott's brief discussion of the exchange between John Knox and Mary Queen of Scotts is excellent.

excellent overview of how to study the Bible
By A Customer
This is a very good basic overview of the right (Biblical) attitude to the Bible, how and when the study it and understand it. It is especially good in helping the reader to see the principles of natural, original and general meaning, and has some useful geographical stuff as well.
Definitely a worthwhile introduction to the topic, with challenges and incentives to read the Bible, while avoiding legalism.

Who are “the Jews”? Scattered over much of the world throughout most of their three-thousand-year-old history, are they one people or many? How do they resemble and how do they differ from Jews in other places and times? What have their relationships been to the cultures of their neighbors?

To address these and similar questions, twenty-three of the finest scholars of our day—archaeologists, cultural historians, literary critics, art historians , folklorists, and historians of relation, all affiliated with major academic institutions in the United States, Israel, and France—have contributed their insight to Cultures of the Jews. The premise of their endeavor is that although Jews have always had their own autonomous traditions, Jewish identity cannot be considered immutable, the fixed product of either ancient ethnic or religious origins. Rather, it has shifted and assumed new forms in response to the cultural environment in which the Jews have lived.

Building their essays on specific cultural artifacts—a poem, a letter, a traveler’s account, a physical object of everyday or ritual use—that were made in the period and locale they study, the contributors describe the cultural interactions among different Jews—from rabbis and scholars to non-elite groups, including women—as well as between Jews and the surrounding non-Jewish world.

Part One, “Mediterranean Origins,” describes the concept of the “People” or “Nation” of Israel that emerges in the Hebrew Bible and the culture of the Israelites in relation to that of the Canaanite groups. It goes on to discuss Jewish cultures in the Greco-Roman world, Palestine during the Byzantine period, Babylonia, and Arabia during the formative years of Islam.

Part Two, “Diversities of Diaspora,” illuminates Judeo-Arabic culture in the Golden Age of Islam, Sephardic culture as it bloomed first if the Iberian Peninsula and later in Amsterdam, the Jewish-Christian symbiosis in Ashkenazic Europe and in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the culture of the Italian Jews of the Renaissance period, and the many strands of folklore, magic, and material culture that run through diaspora Jewish history.

Part Three, “Modern Encounters,” examines communities, ways of life, and both high and fold culture in Western, Central, and Eastern Europe, the Ladino Diaspora, North Africa and the Middle East, Ethiopia, Zionist Palestine and the State of Israel, and, finally, the United States.

Cultures of the Jews is a landmark, representing the fruits of the present generation of scholars in Jewish studies and offering a new foundation upon which all future research into Jewish history will be based. Its unprecedented interdisciplinary approach will resonate widely among general readers and the scholarly community, both Jewish and non-Jewish, and it will change the terms of the never-ending debate over what constitutes Jewish identity.

From Publishers Weekly
This insightful collection of essays by today's leading Judaica scholars (such as Ilana Pardes and Isaiah Gafni) transports the reader from the nascent Jewish nation first emerging from bondage in Egypt through both its cultural and religious decline and efflorescence in the Middle Ages to modern-day Israeli and American Jewish culture. Divided into three sections, "Mediterranean Origins," "Diversities of Diaspora" and "Modern Encounters," the compilation provides an array of creative perspectives. Objects of material culture a map, an amulet, a ketubbah (a Jewish marriage contract) are used as lenses through which to examines various aspects of Jewish life in a given time and place; e.g., a menorah topped by an eagle symbolizing Polish sovereignty opens Moshe Rosman's study of Polish-Lithuanian-Jewish culture. The contributors assume that Jewish history did not develop in a vacuum, but that Jewish culture and religion were at times influenced by the surrounding cultures, and that Jews incorporated elements of what they saw around them while striving to refashion them as distinctly Jewish. Furthermore, if Jewish identity changed according to differing historical contexts, editor Biale (a professor of Jewish history at UC-Davis and author of Power and Powerlessness in Jewish History) suggests, referring to Jewish culture in the singular is inadequate and oversimplified. The authors raise questions central to the understanding of Judaism and Jewish life, and propose answers that try to reconcile ideas with their historical realities. Intellectually stimulating, articulately written and extensively documented, this collection is sure to raise excitement in aficionados looking for something to whet their historical appetite.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* This monumental work comprises essays by 23 scholars, including editor Biale, who also has written a preface and an introduction to each of the book's three sections: Mediterranean Origins, Diversities of Diaspora, and Modern Encounters. Writers from many fields--archaeology, art history, ancient Near Eastern studies, cultural history, literary studies, and folklore--address the question of Jewish identity throughout history. In his conclusion, Biale writes that "The great crises of this age are not the destruction of the Temple but the Holocaust that eradicated the cultures of Jewish Europe and, more broadly, the cultural pluralism ushered in by modernity." The extensive range of concepts and insights raised here cannot be examined in a brief review; suffice it to say that the book is truly one of the most important works on the subject ever published. Oustanding treatment of Jewish cultures
By Yehezkel Dror
There are few more complex and also baffling subjects than the nature of the Jewish People and Judaism as a fusion between a civilization and a community/people/nation. Even more enigmatic is the survival and frequent thriving of Judaism during more than three thousand years of continuous pluralistic existance under a great variety of radically different conditions and in very different political and cultural environments.
This collection by David Biale is an outstanding introduction and profile of this historic riddle, presenting in clear but scholarly sound narratives an overview of the dynamics of Jewish cultures (note the plural) with their shared cores and diverse envelopes. Further such books by Biale are to be eagerly expected, hopefully together with a comprehensive theoretic treatment providing deep understanding of the past and supplying a basis for predicting and trying to weave the future.
This book is strongly recommended to scholars and intellectuals concerned with the history and nature of the Jewish People and to decision makers and policy planners trying to assure its thriving together with contributions to changing global cultures in the future. This book is also essential reading for students of the dynamics of cultures.
Professor Yehezkel Dror. Founding President, the Jewish People Policy Planning Institute (established by the Jewish Agency of Israel) and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Great resource, wonderful to read
By A Customer
I have not read this entire work as yet but I am working on it. The essays offer more than enough detail for the nonscholarly reader to enjoy and learn without being overwhelmed. The writing is clear and well organized. For me, it is a treasure chest of information and insights about the history and social life of the Jewish people.

UNUSUAL SELECTION OF SUBJECT MATTER
By I. W. Gittleman
This book is particularly recommended for the unique subjects being discussed, as well as the 'non-continuity' of each chapter's material.

By this, I mean each chapter=subject does not relate to any previous or subsequent chapter.

This gives one the opportunity to choose whatever subjects interests him/her -- particularly to the non-Jew who seeks only information of select subjects.

The quality of the material is excellent and readable. I have an extensive 'Jewish' library; but have seen no book covering many of its 'unexpected' and most interesting subjects.

A 'must' purchase'; I have seen no book like it.

A Kierkegaard Anthology, by Soren Kierkegaard

This anthology covers the whole of Kierkegaard's literary career. The selections range from the terse epigrams of the Journal through the famous "Diary of the Seducer" and the "Banquet" scene, in which Søren Kierkegaard reveals his great lyric and dramatic gifts, on to the philosophical and psychological works of his maturity. These are climaxed by the beautiful and moving religious discourses which accompany them; finally, there is the biting satire of his Attack upon "Christendom."

This is emphatically not a collection of "snippets," but the cream of Kierkegaard, each selection interesting and intelligible in itself, and all ranking among his most important work. They are so arranged as to convey an idea of his remarkable intellectual development.

Contents: A comprehensive anthology from the following works: Either/Or Fear and Trembling Stages on Life's Way Works of Love Concluding Unscientific Postscript Attack upon "Christendom" The Sickness Unto Death Philosophical Fragments and others

An excellent companion and starting point
By FrKurt Messick
Kierkegaard is enjoying something of a revival of late, with many of his works appearing in new editions, and a major new biography available. The English-speaking world has long been aware of Kierkegaard without being very familiar with his work and issues. One might be surprised that Kierkegaard is not better known, since one of his primary focuses upon philosophy is that it begins and ends with the individual - in many ways, he is anti-Hegelian looking for a way of relating existence to the individual, and not to universals.

Kierkegaard was very much a cynic, but still remained a faithful Christian all of his life, if not a faithful adherent to the institution of the church. Kierkegaard was also a satirist and wit, and sometimes it is difficult to discern where that aspect ends and the serious philosophical work begins. He is often considered the first of the Existentialists, but in many ways his work does not quite fit that category.

This collection contains selections from the following major and minor works of Kierkegaard.

* The Journals * Either/Or * Two Edifying Discourses * Fear and Trembling * Repetition * Philosophical Fragments * Stages on Life's Way * Concluding Unscientific Postscript * The Present Age * Edifying Discourses in Various Spirits * Works of Love * The Point of View for My Work as an Author * The Sickness Unto Death * Training in Christianity * Two Discourses at the Communion on Fridays * The Attack Upon Christendom * The Unchangeableness of God

This collection is no mere collection of quotable-quotes or of key passages, but gives generous inclusion of major sections of the works. Kierkegaard did not write in traditional academic or philosophical structure, so some of his writing is difficult to get through. Part personal reflection, part polemic, part analysis, part literary creative flourish - all of these come together in a fascinating way.

Kierkegaard deals with issues of estrangement and alienation, despair, universals and abstractions, individuality and subjectivity. Kierkegaard sees the person as existing in three different levels - the aesthetic, the ethical and the religious. These are inter-related but distinct in many ways; as they involve the breadth of human experience, Kierkegaard is no mere philosopher, but also a sociologist, a psychologist, a theologian, an historian, and much more.

This is an excellent one-volume edition of Kierkegaard's work, from which one may gain much insight. If coupled with the recent biography by Joakim Garff, it is a very handy reference for Kierkegaard's primary texts together with the insightful writing of Garff.

The Best Place To Start Reading Kierkegaard
By Daniel A. Fincke
Many consider it objectionable (probably Kierkegaard among them!) to chop up philosophical works so literary in style into pieces to be patched together in an anthology. Others would note that a philosopher is best introduced through a painstaking reading of a classic and definitive text, and thus Plato is to be met in "The Republic," Nietzsche in "Thus Spoke Zarathustra," and the later Wittgenstein in "Philosophical Investigations." In the case of Kierkegaard, however, no one work adequately expresses the multi-faceted nature of his messages. His individual works are incomplete as representations of his overall vision. I find, anyway, that they each represent a finely crafted meditation on a crucial aspect of his thought which cannot be fully understood without having all the other aspects in mind. They serve more like chapters in a larger book than they stand independently on their own. That's why Bretall's anthology which presents them as a whole is so valuable.
Bretall also avoids chopping up chapters and ripping quips and humorous digressions or controversial statements out of their context. For the most part he presents key chapters in their entirety and helps to reproduce their context for the reader either by explaining it in his helpful introductions or by presenting enough chapters from a given work that the context of a particular chapter is clear.
Understanding Kierkegaard's context and that of his writings and that of the chapters within them is so crucial to fruitful engagement of his ideas that this compiled tornado of thought that Bretall provides is the best place to start reading him.
But then again, I could be bias because that's how I started reading him...

An Excellent Primer on Kierkegaard
By Dude Man
In a philosophy course on an introduction to Kierkegaard that I took in graduate school, this was one of the texts we used. It's an excellent primer for someone who has relatively little or no knowledge of the "father of existentialism."

I highly recommend it; but to any lover of wisdom, don't stop with just this volume. Princeton University Press has published almost his entire corpus operam, so if you get the wherewithal, check them out too.

Happy reading!
