About the Author
Rex Beach was an American novelist, dramatist, and Olympic water polo player. Rex Beach was born in Atwood, Michigan but moved to Tampa, Florida with his family where his father was growing fruit trees. Early on, he was drawn to Alaska at the time of the Klondike Gold Rush. Rex Beach’s first novel, The Spoilers, was based on a true story of corrupt government officials stealing gold mines from prospectors. The Spoilers became one of the best selling novels and was followed by many other Westerns. For many, Rex Beach is considered the “Victor Hugo of the North,” and his Westerns have been adapted into successful films.

Set in the wilds of the Yukon during the gold rush. Local lass Necia Gale is the daughter of the town's white trader and his Indian common-law wife. French Canadian Poleon Doret loves and accepts Necia for who she is, so naturally she doesn't want him. Lt. Meade Burrell is attracted to the underage girl but he can't look past his own prejudices at her being a "half breed", so of course he's the one Necia pines for.

Great examples of practical optoelectronic circuits

If you are a physicist or engineer, you'll find plenty of textbooks on optics, electronics, and optoelectronics, but probably not many examples of optoelectronic circuits. That is where the value of this book lies. There are the very basics of theory on optics in these chapters, but you will need to read other books to really be able to say you know optics. Chapter 3 is where the book takes a big upswing in quality and uniqueness. This chapter on optocouplers and optointerfacing and the example circuits are brilliant. Obvious and plain commonsense, you'll ask yourself "why didn't I think of it"? "Optocouplers and optointerfacing" presents a great many circuits for any number of purposes and the standouts would have to be the TTL - to - RS-232 interface, RS-232 infrared data transmission system and, a high speed RS-232 infrared computer interface. In later chapters we get to "wireless security systems" another interesting subject. The schematics are quite clear, contain comprehensive parts lists and include manufacturers of unusual parts. I didn't check the degree of ease or difficulty of sourcing these parts but I note that light dependent resistors and the phototransistor are manufactured by Vactec. They are not mentioned in the appendix of sources and vendors. Later chapters in my opinion only get better and better provided you have an interest in these areas.
In summary I highly recommend this book to individuals who want to get their hands on some concrete projects that unite the power of electronics and optics, provided they have other sources for the theory and also provided they are prepared to do some hunting for some of the rarer devices needed to build some of the circuits.

One of the best electronic books today, optoelectronics is perfect, fun and easy to use. This is a guide to optical circuits which includes fiber optics and lasers, provides a collection of experiments and projects for the college student, technician, and hobbyist. The book is greatly detailed and simple directions to enter the field of optoelectronics in nontechnical terms. It is really fun and again, easy to use for any of its 88 projects. Dare to be challeged and be caught up in what I call the best "something to do" book.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS -- AND IN PLAIN ENGLISH TOO!

Newcomers to the study of law often regard the subject as an abstruse one, even though fascinating. This is partly because, as the author Gary Slapper points out, most students of law at universities encounter this complex and varied field for the first time, not having had the benefit of studying it previously in school.

Here, then, is a useful and engaging source of explanation of the law of England and Wales in clear, plain English. Students and non-lawyers alike, wishing to improve their knowledge of the law will love it.

Professor Slapper, director of the Law School at The Open University maintains (quite rightly) that law is a matter of life and death. Whether you know – or choose to know -- anything about the law or not, law affects just about everything in your world, whether important or unimportant -- from the air you breathe, to the food you eat, to property, and family relationships… or whether you are able to have any property or family relationships, or for that matter, adequate food at all. ‘The rule of law is the first rule of a democracy,’ says the author, noting that ‘in a democracy like the UK’s the law has the highest power.’

Like every other utterance and insight in this richly detailed book, these observations provide considerable food for thought. Gradually, much of the mystery of the law is to a gratifying extent, demystified and explained page by page, often with entertaining anecdotes and with enlightening historical perspective.

The useful and detailed table of contents lists the topics covered, including Judges… Lawyers... Cases and the Courts… Interpreting Acts of Parliament… The Jury… Language and the Law, and much more besides. The book is full of what might be termed ‘aha’ moments. To cite one example, did you know the word ‘solicitor’ is derived from the Latin ‘solicito’ which means ‘I bother or worry’: This should be inscribed on the front door of the Law Society, definitely!

Usefully for novices in the law, there are any number of suggestions for further reading, not to mention tables of cases and legislation, together with a bibliography and glossary of terms. ‘Miscellany’ the last chapter includes ‘ten great free websites offering law… ten great places to experience law live… and ten great films for those interested in the law.’ Written not just to be studied, but enjoyed, ‘How the Law Works’ does work brilliantly as an informed and informative introduction to the study of law for those approaching it for the first time.

As far as I am concerned this book is one of the most significant that Llewellyn ever published. It demonstrates the debt that western occult philosophy and practice owes to Greek thought. As the author points out you can hardly open any book on this subject without finding Plato and Plotinus on every page.
The history of Greek mystical and magical thought is traced progressively from Archaic and Classical Greece, to the growth of the Mysteries, to the wider Hellenistic period, to Gnosticism, to Middle Platonism, to the Greek New Testament, to Neoplatonism, to the Renaissance, to 19th and 20th century occult societies (Golden Dawn, Theosophical Society, Rosicrucian, Fraternitas Saturni, Aurum Solis, etc.) An especially good case is made for cabalistic thought being as much, or more, Greek as Hebrew in nature.
Yet, in spite of the main purpose of showing Greek influence, the author doesn't hesitate to point out the roots of Orphism and Pythagorianism may very well have been influenced by Siberian Shamanism.
I have only two comments about the content. First, the author does an excellent job of condensing all that is know about the nature of the various mysteries. He also makes some perceptive speculations of his own. However, he misses what has long been obvious to me- namely, that at least at Eleusis, the Greater mysteries involved an induced near death experience in the subterranean chambers. Also, while a comprehensive appendix concerning Isopsephos (numerical values of Greek words and names), I couldn't help but notice that there is no interpretation of 999....

One of the best introductions to Greek Magick ever written

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it to anyone. Godwin shows how Greek philosophy and mysticism has influenced thought, religion, and metaphysics throughout history. This book is essential for anyone studying the Qabbalah, Gnosticism, the Golden Dawn, Wicca, or any other magickal religion or system. It helps show the foundations on which all of these systems are built and shows how the ideas of Plato and Plotinus have grown, developed, and shaped modern thought.
