my favorite ESL textbook series

I discovered the Side By Side series when I went through the materials left behind by my predecessor at my first ESL teaching job, in Hiroshima 20 years ago. I continue to find this series the most useful for my work. It's kind of random to review this workbook, but this is a chance to give the whole series a big Thumb's-Up.Through its dialogs, it offers a painless way for students to review grammar which they studied long ago. And the workbooks are carefully integrated with the texts.

Important and Relevant Today

This is an important book and amazingly relevant to today on two levels.

First, it is a first-hand account of early 20th Century immigration and the hard dangerous labor (such as coal mining) that many new immigrants were recruited to undertake in order to become Americans. The hardships faced by new-come families struggling to learn English, fit into their new society and culture, learning to carry on despite prejudice, ethnic slurs, closed doors and stumbling blocks put in their way. Like my own grandfather, the author’s father was falsely accused of irregularities in his naturalization processes, but prevailed through a steadfast belief in the possibilities of America that had brought him here in the first place.
Here you see how the Greatest Generation was forged by an exemplar: Louis Sarris comes of age through the Great Depression and World War II when he leaves college to enlist. He endures the horrors of the Battle of the Bulge for this adopted country that barely accepted their newest citizens.

Second, as one of the best and brightest he remains positive and optimistic as he embraces education and every opportunity that he can to work for Congress, than at the State Department as an intelligence analyst during the run-up to and through the debacle of the Vietnam War. His accounts are a revelation for those of us younger people who were drafted and sent to fight; or those of us lucky enough to be in school and marching in protests; but for all of us bewildered by the divisions in the nation and awakened to the terrible contradictions exposed by the war. Louis Sarris relates what was happening inside our government - the White House, the Pentagon, and the Department of State, as he sees our highest officials lose their compass and their integrity to become mired in politics and wishful thinking. He himself did none of those things. He maintained his honesty, objectivity, earnestness, and integrity to tell the truth despite attacks and undermining by Pentagon officials, State department politicos and politicians intent on forging ahead no matter how wrong-headed. He suffered an exile to an unoccupied attic in the State Department and endures a kind of shunning until as the saying goes: the truth set him free.

So how does this apply today? History never quite repeats itself, but the parallels between this country’s treatment of its disenfranchised and of its new citizens then and now are uncomfortable - do we learn nothing?
And more unsettling is the contentious atmosphere of the many facets of our society during the Vietnam era as compared to today’s events during our unending polemics in the unending Middle East wars. We can’t know if there is a Lou Sarris in the State Department today - I hope there is and that he or she may somehow prevail and give us the truth someday.

Meanwhile. Read this book if you too come from an immigrant family then or now. Read it too if you lived through the Vietnam era and can stand the pain of remembering that time. (I found it difficult). Read it for insight into today’s headlines if you wonder what kind of country we are presently creating. But most of all, read it for hope. This is not a book of doom and despair but rather one of the power of personal integrity against all odds and of how family love sustains us and prevails over all. Thank you, Mr. Sarris.

How the State Dept. was right on Vietnam

A great read and an eye opener about how the Military and the Pentagon bambozzled the President(s) on Vietnam and the President(s) allowed themselves to ignore the advise of the State Department. Lou Sarris tells it like it was and had President Johnson listened to his State Department's advise he would probably have been able to seek another term. Richard Nixon, who was suppose to get us out of Vietnam, fell prey to the same distorted advise of the Pentagon and likewise ignored the State Department advise to the point that he tried to fire Lou Sarris. Since it is tough to just arbitrarily fire a government employee, Lou was "assigned to be in charge of a broom closet," as they say in government. That is like being put in solitary confinement; where they move you to a small office (the size close to a broom closet) with a desk and chair, with no work and generally no phone, and you come to work each day and sit and do nothing. It is like shunning and the hope is that you will resign or retire if you have the years. However, when Nixon resigned his office over Watergate, and the fallacies of the Vietnam War became known, Lou Sarris and the State Department were vindicated.

Laugh and Learn

Don't be misled by the humor in this book, it is a thoughtful and insightful look at relationships from an experienced couples therapist, Trevor Silvester. Trevor brings together elements of the NLP model of Preferred Representational Systems and Simple Metaprograms to outline 8 'lovebird' types. He sets out how these types love, their strengths and potential blind spots in relationships. Also how they interact with other Lovebird types. The principles are illustrated with examples and anecdotes, often humorous, which makes them even more memorable.

I have used Trevor's model to explain personality differences to couples who are experiencing relationship problems and they have all found it helpful. Also interesting for those embarking on new relationships who want to learn more about themselves before they leap in.

Love this book!

I highly recommend this book. It is a must read for all kinds of couples in any stage of the game. This book gave me some really great pointers of what I can do to improve my marriage, but more importantly it gave me a deeper understanding of myself and WHY I think the way I think... and that the way I think (though similar because we are both Swans) is different than the way my husband thinks (since my Kingfisher side gets in the way a little). And guess what... That's perfectly normal and fine! We just need to recognize that and find the best way for US and OUR Lovebirds to build the happiest nest we can.

The pictures were fantastic and the knowledge amazing. My husbands ancesters were raised in Tacoma, so I had heard snipets of the old railroad lines and trolleys. To actually see pictures were a special gift.

Awesome Story!!!

Suzan can spin a story with some awesome characters. Alysander is a hopeless drunk after the death of his brother but then his world is turned up side down and set to right with the love of five women, yes five women, his wife and her four daughters. Moirra handfasts with Alysander to help with her farm, but love blooms. Their daughters don't trust any man but Alysander earns their respect, trust and love. One daughter in particular is going to be a major handful for Alysander but he knows that Orabilis heart is loyal to the bone for her family. Orabilis maybe only six years old but she has the heart of a warrior and ready to call to arms and rush to cut down anyone who tries to harm her Mom, sisters or her new Dad. I predict that Orabilis story will be a rough and tumble with plenty of twists and turns with a lot of shock and awe with laughter at every turn........ Suzan Tisdale Thank You, Thank You, Thank You for an awesome adventure!!!!

This book is SO much better knowing the beginning

If you have not read Guarding Moirra’s Heart (in the Cridhe Highland Winds Series) you need to do that before this. This book is SO much better knowing the beginning. However, this one could be a stand-alone book. I liked this book more than I liked the Caelen’s Wife Series. You can read the blurb to get the story line, but I will say, it was, as usual, well-written, and well put-together. There was drama, suspense, a little necessary violence and my favorite part – romance. My favorite quotes were when Moirra asked herself or perhaps she asked God: “Had she done something in her past that had angered God? …He’d (God) given her the one thing she had silently longed for…Then He took it all away. Thank you Ms. Tisdale.

Alexandra and Moirra had been burned out of their home. They had to take the girls to sleep in the barn. The Sheriff of Glenkirby came the next morning and arrested Moirra for murder. They beat up Alysander and took Moirra and tossed her into a nasty cell. James McGregor asked Finnish Malcom, Alysander's friend, for help. At the trial Alysander told them she didn't do the murder, he did so he could take her place. Finnish sent William and two of his men to Robert II, Guardian of Scotland, who was a cousin of Alysander's, for help. There were twists, turns, humor and love in this great story. I can't wait for another book on the people in this tale.
