The best book I have read on music!

My teacher at the school of music told me she was going to make little BAchs out of us! Well, we did all the harmony theory...wrote chorals and when I graduated I went on to compose POP!! Haha what a laugh that was! Little bachs going for pop! Buddy you have no idea!!! This author is amazing. He tells you all the tools and secrets right down to the detail of how to compose POP music. Forget the classical harmony you learned because it is a whole different ball game in POP! He is an excellent teacher! Between all 103 music books I have studied this was number 1!!! I have no hesitation in recommending this book. Just 1 point though...it would have been perfect had there been an audio CD with it to listen to the examples. Thank you and God Bless!

Jai Josefs has a real gift for teaching.

This is easily the best book that I've read on pop music theory and structure. Not only does he cover all the material in a way that isn't boring, he adds even more interest with examples from familiar music.

After borrowing a copy from my local library I decided it was essential and bought my own copy.

This book is as good as Rikky Rooksby's best book: The Songwriting Sourcebook. Actually, I take that back, it's BETTER. I learned about secondary dominants, secondary subdominants, writing in minor keys, and borrowed chords, which Rikky Rooksby's book doesn't cover quite as well. Do yourself a favor and read this book...TWICE.

Tulisa grew up on a tough London estate and left school with no qualifications as she struggled to cope with deep-seated emotional problems while caring for her mother alone. She has seen first hand what drugs, alcohol, gang culture and violent relationships can do to young people, but she has come through it all to become the confident, inspiring artist she is today.

I'm American but am very interested in British pop culture. I came across N-Dubz's music about a year ago and really took an interest. Their songs are very catchy and they're actually a very talented group. So of course I knew of Tulisa because of them and also took an interest in her career. I love reading autobiographies so of course I put this on my wishlist. Initially, it had been pretty expensive for a kindle book but then just recently I saw it went down to $8 so I didn't hesitate to buy it. So glad I did! It was such an interesting read, I really couldn't put it down. She seems so real and down to earth and doesn't hold back from giving her life story and all the experiences she's been through. It's a bit of a shocking book at times but mostly, if anything, it's inspiring because someone so young as Tulisa has been able to turn all the negative into positive and now she's inspiring others who might be going through difficult times. I definitely recommend this if you, too, enjoy biographies or are a fan of N-dubz. Great read!

When I was younger I was a huge fan of hers so i decided to read her book to see what she was really like. There had been so much stories in the media about her doing drugs and selling them, that i wanted to read her story.
This book gives you the insight into everything that's happened so far in her life and she has had to deal with a lot of stuff from quite a young age. By readying this book you can see that she is an intelligent lady that has overcome many struggles in her life and you can see the real her through a different light.

I thoroughly enjoyed and learned from this book. As a principal, I'm often too busy to need anything but the WHAT and the HOW associated with school change. I like how the book focuses on practical advice to help plan for school change and create your own list of specific actions to be taken. It's an easy read and is very conversational in style. Reading the book felt as if I were talking directly with the author. It really is a "MUST HAVE" for teachers, leaders, and principals! You will not be disappointed.

Whitaker - Useful Tools to Use for School Change

Each time I read a book written by Todd Whitaker, I find valuable tools in the pages. Often, I am able to immediately apply the ideas in my school. Leading School Change com­partmentalizes management advice into nine valuable strategies for facing changes.

One of the introductory points that I found interesting encourages school leaders to take a hard look at what might be the true concerns caused by a procedural, structural, or cultural transformation before making an assumption and acting in a manner that might cause further challenges. Ideas are provided for making first impressions positive, identifying the social status of different types of employees, and finding ways to con­nect with every­one, from the newbies on staff to the potential burnouts.

This book guides readers through the pro­cess of reducing resistance to change, using emotions to encourage buy-in, and moving on to an action-based approach. Whitaker notes, "One way to get everyone on the bandwagon is to make it seem as if most of their colleagues are already on board." He goes further to share that the need to belong is a very strong motivator and finding the right motivator for the right person is key to professional success.

Whitaker empathizes with teachers for the amount of self-confidence it takes to be in front of a classroom. With the right motivation and encour­agement, every teacher can be his or her best. Our role as school principals is to provide a trusting culture that supports growth for all stakeholders.

Thanks to Whitaker, I have made a commitment to recognize the posi­tive work happening in my elementary school. I know how important it is to show staff members that they are important to the success of our school. As Whitaker explains, "The very best teachers always make students feel val­ued." The principal's job is to reinforce positive contributions of the teachers and staff so they too feel that they make a difference in their daily work. I also plan to be more aware of when I should step back and allow others to take the lead. As Whitaker stresses, there are times when support comes from stand­ing beside or behind your staff, and not from the front of the line.

Beginnings: A Fine Start

Edward Said's first significant book Beginnings (1975) was his initial foray in unraveling the often convoluted role of the intellectual who seeks to comprehend the inner significance of the beginnings of human culture. The word "beginnings" defies a ready explanation as does its frequent synonym "origins." As defined by Said, a beginning has its roots in the cold clay of humanity while an origin is more esoteric, more heavenly, more divine. Human beings tend to integrate themselves into the life spaces of others as they choose how, when, and where they choose to assimilate. Divine beings, gods, goddesses, and other assorted preternatural entities tend to focus near the hub of culture, interacting only with themselves. Said suggests that human culture commences with a beginning rather than an origin. Whatever preceded a beginning is akin to what preceded the microdot singularity that produced the Big Bang. Meaning, movement, and motivation are products of one human interacting with another to form an ongoing and self-directing purpose. Such primitive beginnings take on an evolving symmetry of conflict which soon enough morphs into multi-functional possibilities. "Possibilities" is a catch-all term denoting the entire spectrum of human achievement, one small part of which is literary. The inner structure of culture has a built-in kinetic base that manifests itself in the spoken word. Edward Said insists that the genre best suited to authorize and legitimize the inevitably expanding web of culture is the novel. A novel permits its author considerable latitude to create meaning by using potentially transgressive language to elide into actually transgressive language, thus giving violent birth to the beginnings engendered by the title of his book. At this point, what was "begun" by this process no longer needs language to survive. What emerges from this womb of beginning is a paradigm of discovery, one that can be repeated ad infinitum. Opposing this creation of mini-universes of subversion is the implosion of force, of ideas, and of energy that typifies much of what passes for inbred and inbuilt specialization, all of which congealed into a roadblock prohibiting future beginnings. Edward Said asks critics not to look inward toward merely using language as a dress and dross covering non-functional ornaments of outdated tradition but rather to look outward seeking a constantly widening horizon of new beginnings pointing toward a future level of human achievement that requests but does not demand it.
