Nutrition and exercise are only two pieces of the puzzle of how to get fit and lose weight, writes Michael Gerrish. The other "UFOs" ("unidentified fitness obstacles") are barriers to getting fit. These might involve sleep, work addiction, food allergies, or a number of medical or emotional conditions or lifestyle issues.

Gerrish, an exercise physiologist, personal trainer, and psychotherapist, gives a self-test to see which of the 58 UFOs are yours and describes how you can conquer each one. He includes exercise information, with descriptions and illustrations of recommended strength training and stretching exercises, and a general diet plan. He also describes energy block acutherapy, a self-help breathing and tapping sequence to treat fears, addictions, cravings, self-sabotage, and post-traumatic stress.

Complicated and misleading

The author begins by having the reader answer 58 sets of six questions to discover what he terms "UFOs" -- unidentified fitness obstacles. Although I'm in good shape, I've been in better shape, and the idea of discovering and handling what's between me and my realistic objectives, was what I found appealing about this book. However, in execution this idea fails miserably (at best) or is downright dangerous (at worst). When you've finished your 58 sets of answers, you're to rank your sets by cumulative total score and choose the top ten. These top ten (highest cumulative totals from the six answers) are your personal fitness obstacles. Sounds great, right? Except for two significant issues. First, the idea that the medical and physiological conditions he identifies can be diagnosed with six written and highly subjective answers is wholly incorrect. Second, medical or physiological conditions (severity, persistance) can't be compared with one another, so the idea of ranking them categorically is also absurd.

The idea that one could have an amino acid deficiency, based on six answers and no consultation with a doctor, especially when we in this country get FAR more protein than we need, is silly. Same with candidiasis, or ADD, or body dysmorphic disorder, or many of the other UFOs. This is not to say you might not find some useful information here. No doubt you're aware of something that's between you and your goals, as I am. Where this idea becomes dangerous is in his later mentioning of supplements and herbal remedies that are often used to treat your newly-discovered UFOs. To be clear, the author never directly suggests that readers treat themselves, instead listing the treatment options and supplements used to treat the disorder, and he mentions speaking to one's doctor several times. But realistically, if you find his recommendation for an easily-available over-the-counter supplement and a recommendation for talking to your doctor in the same list of options, which one will you choose?

The workout plan is a bit complicated and requires strict attention to detail (which is neither an endorsement nor a criticism, just information). He probably overemphasizes the importance of form and method in training with weights a bit, suggesting that you'll get no benefit unless you follow his advice. While form and method are important in achieving results and avoiding injury, the idea that you won't notice any benefit unless you follow his directions exactly is too draconian. Even the diet recommendations are based on the erroneous information you might get from the UFO section. Fully half the book's pages are case studies from six individuals who went through the program for 12 weeks. (Not surprisingly, all did well). By that time, I was so annoyed with the incorrect and potentially harmful information in the UFO section and the overempahsis on form in the workout section, that it read like self-serving endorsement to me.

There are far simpler workout plans and diet plans out there that won't give you false, misleading, or potentially harmful information. Choose another title.

Inspirational and "How To" Live Healthfully Manual for Life

As a daily athlete for over thirty years who took to the roads to run long before women's running shoes, I have seen and read it all regarding books and theories on how to get fit. Michael's book is the real thing. That's because Michael is the real thing--a well-educated, thoughtful expert who lives what he preaches. He walksthetalk and that comes across in this book which should be mandatory reading and a life manual for people of ALL ages and ALL abilities. It is well-researched, well-written, and a reading experience that can provide each of us with the skills and knowledge to change our own lives.

Michael Gerrish has created a revolutionary system for identifying and overcoming our own individual blocks to success. His UFO (Unidentified Fitness Obstacles) Test is thorough, exact and right on. My results painted a very clear picture of what's standing in the way of my health, fitness and outlook on life. Gerrish supports the reader with specific recommendations and resources for each UFO; easy to follow exercises (with great diagrams!); nutrition and supplement information and he even has a whole section that addresses fear and energy blocks!
