About the Author
William Shakespeare was born in April 1564 in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon, on England s Avon River. When he was eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway. The couple had three children an older daughter Susanna and twins, Judith and Hamnet. Hamnet, Shakespeare s only son, died in childhood. The bulk of Shakespeare s working life was spent in the theater world of London, where he established himself professionally by the early 1590s. He enjoyed success not only as a playwright and poet, but also as an actor and shareholder in an acting company. Although some think that sometime between 1610 and 1613 Shakespeare retired from the theater and returned home to Stratford, where he died in 1616, others believe that he may have continued to work in London until close to his death.

The Definitive Scholar's Hamlet

The Oxford Shakespeare editions are in my opinion the best for scholarly work. They all include introductory matter intended to catch the reader up with current Shakespearian research. This Hamlet edition is edited by G. R. Hibbard. It includes a general introduction that outlines the great tragedy's sources and history, including a lot of material concerning its early and contemporary production history. The text is taken from the Folio edition, but the volume also contains a textual introduction that explains the differences between the various Quarto editions and the Folio. In the text itself there are even notes to point out these differences. The footnotes do a great job of translating Shakespeare's English into more contemporary renderings. Even those new to Shakespearean English should have little trouble making their way through the text. The appendices outline even more distinctions between the various historical sources, sheet music for the songs in the play, and even material concerning the alterations made to the play's lineation. Once again, this edition was clearly designed with the serious scholar in mind. But even the casual Shakespeare reader will gain much from this edition.

Great edition for the Shakespeare scholar.

The cover-art alone is worth the price. Moreover, the quality of the paper is very good, with clear, sharp printed text.
One drawback might be that the Oxford editors use the F version of the play and have included parts of Q2, such as Hamlet's 4.4
soliloquy in the appendix. Overall a very good value.

The best for Hamlet. The notes are extensive and thorough, much better than other editions I have encountered.
All the Oxford Shakespeare editions that I have are top-notch. Just get A.C. Bradley's book of criticism to complete
your reading experience of Hamlet and the other major tragedies.

The Next Great YA Book Series

I read "Max Cassidy Escape from Shadow Island" ALOUD to our boys in three days! They would not let me stop reading. At the end of every chapter they would chant, "Read another chapter! Read another chapter!" This book keeps you on the edge of your seat from the very first chapter.

Max Cassidy will become your teenager's hero after reading "Max Cassidy Escape from Shadow Island." He is a likeable character. As a teenage boy, he doesn't have an attitude and he's a hard-worker who has come upon a lot of tragedy in the past 2 years of his life. I believe the theme of "Escape from Shadow Island" was that children and teens are often underestimated. But Max proved those unbelieving adults wrong. And that's why he's a great hero.

I loved this book and so did our two sons. I would recommend it to a reader who is 14 years or older. There are a few "bad" words. The Lord's name is taken in vain and the "H" word is used once or twice. Since I was reading aloud, I could replace them with my own words. All-in-all I rate this book a 10+++. We can't wait to read the next installment!

Teenage Max Cassidy is an escape artist, following in his father's footsteps. But his father was murdered two years ago, and his mother wrongly accused and imprisoned. When a strange man shows up after Max's latest show, he claims that Max's father is still alive. Max's one clue is a piece of paper with only numbers written down. But Max will return to the place that his father was last seen in Santo Domingo, a country with a corrupt regime. Max's search leads him to a small island with a former prison that is still guarded with armed men. Risking his life to save his family, Max begins a dangerous journey to discover the truth.

Max is talented, smart, and extremely brave. When faced with a hard decision, he does the brave thing and won't stop until he rescues his loved ones. He's a brilliant combination of a young James Bond and Harry Houdini. And Max's adversaries are just as mysterious and deadly as any Bond villain.

The story is fast-paced, with heart-pounding suspense. Excitement and mystery abound. As the climactic ending approaches, Max just begins to unravel the secrecy behind Shadow Island that ends in a fun cliffhanger. I devoured this book in record time, loving every minute of it. Young action and adventure fans shouldn't miss this new series.

Max Cassidy is a great murder, mystery read, as 14 yr old Max is out to prove that his Mum didn't kill his father, a world famous escape artist who was killed two years ago Santo Domingo. Now Max has followed in his father's shoes and can escape from most anything, even the unescapable Shadow Island.

In his quest to prove his Mum's innocence, Max travels from England to Santo Domingo to find answers. Max soon learns that finding his answers will be anything but easy, as those who know what happened to his father were either murdered or won't talk about it. Max isn't one to give up easily and as one event after another unfolds, Max realizes he's in a much more sinister game than he realized.

In a country where those with money and powerful ties control everything, even his Mum's fate, Max doesn't stand a chance. Max won't give up, even when he's in over his head. Knowing that his Mum is innocent and his father isn't dead, Max will stop at nothing to find out what happened.

This is a great read that I think both teens and tweens will enjoy. I'm looking forward to finding out what happens next, as Max Cassidy ends on a good cliff hanger.

Euthanasia and Physician Assisted Suicide: For and Against is a book written by three well-known philosophers and ethicists: Gerald Dworkin, R.G. Frey and Sissela Bok. This book discusses the moral issues of euthanasia and physician assisted suicide. The book is broken down into two parts, the first part contains arguments for euthanasia and assisted suicide and the second part is against.

The first part is broken up into four essays written by Dworkin and Frey. They discuss the "quintessential" case of physician-assisted suicide, in which the patient is competent, informed, terminally ill and has voluntarily requested the doctor's assistance in dying. The first essay discusses, and rejects the idea that the principles of medicine prohibits a person's physician to act with the intent to take the life of a patient or to provide means for the patient to do so himself. This essay refuses this idea and argues that it is in fact the physician's job to help people ease their suffering and that a patient's wish must never be overlooked. The second essay talks about distinctions in death. What is considered Euthanasia and what is considered physician assisted suicide? How do the ethics of each differ? Through this chapter readers take a closer look at the difference between "letting a patient die" and "intentionally ending life". This essay also discusses the moral dilemma a doctor must face when dealing with a terminal patient who wants to die. The third essay gives the reader an understanding about why people fear to legalize euthanasia and snubs the opinion that legalizing physician assisted suicide will lead to mass killing. The fourth and final essay of part one deals with public policy and changes that may (or may not) need to be made if legalization were to take place. The authors fail to see why public policy would have a more difficult time dealing with physician assisted suicide and euthanasia then they do when dealing with withdrawal of life support or termination of water and food at the patients request (both practices not considered illegal).

The second part is also broken down into four parts. Bok discusses why euthanasia and physician assisted suicide is morally wrong. Unlike her co-authors she does not stick to strictly a moral discussion but talks about the subject on broader terms by providing not only personal experiences but also discusses the legalization of euthanasia and physician assisted suicide in the Netherlands. The first chapter discusses the differences in choosing death and taking life with an "anti-legalization" edge. The second chapter discusses suicide; it's history, the emergence of Christianity and suicide, and pain management. The third part takes an interesting view on euthanasia, patient's autonomy, and the societal risks involved with legalizing euthanasia. The fourth and final part examines the role of physicians and the possibility that a patient who wants to die may just need help with depression.

This book is one of the many books published about the moral debates on euthanasia and physician assisted suicide. It presented two very convincing arguments that help readers understand where both sides are coming from. Although this book is convenient in that both sides are accessible in one publication, it was also rather difficult to comprehend. The fact that the book was written by three very intelligent people, two of which have their PhD's in philosophy, should automatically let the reader know that this book is probably not going to be an easy read. The first half is especially wordy and difficult to grasp. One must read and re-read and to understand what point the author is trying to make. I often found myself re-reading to understand one point, then when reading further along I discovered that either the point I thought the author wanted to make was with wrong or that the author had moved on to a different, equally difficult argument. Indeed, during the second essay Distinctions in Death by R.G. Frey, I felt as if the essay were taking me around in circles, going through the same line of reasoning over and over again, even when the author insisted that there were several points to his argument. The first part, while informative, is not as convincing as it could be due to the difficulty in understanding it.

Anyone who reads this book will be more inclined to agree that Bok, no matter what previous opinions one may have, has the better argument. Her positions are clearer, more to the point and offer up more than just a philosophical view on the subject. The fact that she draws from personal experience and offers unambiguous information about related topics helps the reader understand what she wants to say. People can relate to this woman more than they can relate to the essays of Dworkin and Frey.

Although this book is designed to target readers who have not yet made a finalized opinion concerning the controversy of euthanasia and physician assisted suicide I would suggest something more comprehensible to start with. This is not a good book to introduce people to the arguments who have not heard much about it to begin with. If you are an intensely philosophical, or if you deal with these arguments frequently than this book may be for you, otherwise look for something different.

Scholarly Conference Collection - Good, but too Expensive

This is a collection of 19 presentations on Chocolate given at the Hofstra's scholarly conference "Chocolate: Food of the Gods" and published in 1997. The essays are wonderful and interesting, and have a lot of great information, but the price of the book is going to drive away any casual readers. If you have a hankering to read this one, you might want to check out your library first and make sure the book is worth the price to you.

NOTE: The price as of this writing is over $80 for the Kindle version and over $100 for the Hardcover. If the price goes down significantly, up the stars to four. It's good reading for chocolate lovers who happen to be scholarly, but is set at scholarly prices that put it out of the range of casual readers.

What the fans have been waiting for

I have been looking for a book about the Pretty Little Liars tv show ever since the show began. This is the first and only book I have found. It covers the first 2 seasons. The book covers every episode as well as just about every aspect of the show including cast, characters, facts, etc. The book includes many pictures in both color and b&w. If you are a fan of the series you will want this book.

Liv Spencer's Rosewood Confidential goes in-depth into the first two seasons of the hit ABC Family series Pretty Little Liars. In keeping with the format of other show guides from ECW Press, Rosewood Confidential goes episode by episode with a summary of what happened followed by other tidbits like "extra credit" (explanations of references made in the episode), "slip ups" (mistakes made), and "back to the books" (how Sara Shepard's books relate to the show) among others. At the beginning of the book are the biographies of the main actors; those who play secondary characters are profiled throughout the episode guides. There are also extras like features on the music and wardrobe to break up the standard format a bit.

Spencer definitely did her research on the show, but I didn't always agree with what she deemed "slip ups." For example, she calls it a goof when Hanna claims not to be able to afford a fancy hotel despite her expensive wardrobe in episode 1.03 and again when Hanna says the dance in episode 1.14 is for a good cause even though it's to benefit their class trip. I can explain these (and some of the other so-called slip ups) easily as being very much in character. Hanna's already been established as a shoplifter, so the expensive clothes probably weren't paid for. As for the dance, Hanna's exactly the sort that would think "a good cause" is her own class trip. However, I did appreciate the inclusion (even if it wasn't really a slip up) of an interesting nugget of information regarding episode 1.21. In that episode it seemed weird that the girls kept saying website when they were clearing referring to Facebook. Spencer clears up the mystery by revealing that "website" had to be dubbed in later when the ABC Family lawyers told them they couldn't use Facebook. Little facts like that make Rosewood Confidential a great read.

When I received this book it was again in excellent shape and condition. I just got started watching the series on Netflix and saw that you had the books I had to get them. All received in good condition. Except for one. But nothing major it was used and when a book has a little wear it is a book that was loved and read. Would highly recommend Amazon.

Yay, Springtrap, but poor use of grammar, spelling, tense, etc. make it a poor read

Pro: This is from Springtrap's perspective and has an interesting take on that character in the whole story of FNAF.

Con: Well... This was for my daughter because she is a huge fan of the franchise but I must say that I am disappointed in the grammar and spelling displayed here. The only reason I am giving two stars instead of one is because I absolutely could not tell whether the jumping between past/present tense, first person vs. third person, and the normal paragraph styling vs. script stylized writing was done on purpose or just fit whatever whim the author had. I cannot excuse the lack of proof-reading. Odd sentences, improper grammar, and actual typos are all throughout and I was severely disappointed. My daughter is supposed to read every day for school. I was hoping that this would be a good read for her but do I really want her learning words and sentence structure that aren't accurate? No. The big clincher was the use of cursing. Definitely not for kids. Definitely not recommended for anyone.

I would love to be a proof-reader for the company, or even the individual in charge of "Two Sovereigns Publishing" but I found no website or email with which to contact them.

Extremely well written book.

Extremely well written book. If you are interested in the Five Nights at Freddy’s you must read this book. It has satisfying ending and doesn’t leave you hanging. I read it all in one day! It's a great horror read that kept me wanting to know what happens next. I would definitely recommend this book to any FNAF fans and fans of horror in general.

There is no slow moment in this story. I was immediately drawn in by the author's vivid descriptions and strategic placement of suspense. He seamlessly weaves in a commentary on human nature and the human soul, with a captivating story line. Would highly recommend to any fnaf fans out there.

This is it!

I am a blues novice. I played the blues on keyboards for years. I decided to become adventurous, picking up the fiddle a year ago. I am self taught fiddler using an electric fretted violin.

I wanted to play the blues on the fiddle. I bought and went through stacks of books. I even tried to transition from other instruments (guitar and keyboards) to the fiddle. It has been frustrating and I was getting no where fast. I bought this book last week and holy cow I wish I would have bought this one first. I can't put it down.

I'm sure that you have read "Lessons start off in the beginning with some basics and then builds you up fast." Most of the time I find that statement as hype. However, this book delivers. Not only does it gives you the basics of blues on the fiddle but leads you into variations that give you the ability to improvise on the same song.

No mistake on buying this book! If you are going to buy one book on learning to play the blues on a fiddle, this is the book you need to buy.

Learning Fiddle Blues? Get This Book!

I've come across several books on scales for violin, but always had difficulty finding pentatonic scales/arpeggios. After receiving this book, flipping through it for the first time, was thoroughly impressed. I got exactly what I was looking for! Definitely for beginners, and people just looking to advance their violin improv skills. I play in an alt-bluegrass group, and this information is going to improve my skills for the next several years! Comes highly recommended.

James Cuno is president and CEO of the J. Paul Getty Trust. He served as president and director of the Art Institute of Chicago from 2004 until 2011, the Courtauld Institute of Art from 2002 until 2004, and the Harvard University Art Museums from 1991 to 2002. He lives in Los Angeles.

About the Author

The late Murray R. Spiegel received the M.S. degree in physics and the Ph.D. in mathematics from Cornell University. He had positions at Harvard University, Columbia University, Oak Ridge, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and served as a mathematical consultant at several large companies. His last position was professor and chairman of mathematics at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Hartford Graduate Center. He was interested in most branches of mathematics, especially those which involve applications to physics and engineering problems. He was the author of numerous journal articles and 14 books on various topics in mathematics.

A good overview but a little too broad in scope

This outline covers just about all of the applied mathematics that upper level undergraduate and graduate engineers need to know to solve problems. It is a great reference, but its scope is so broad that you really can't use it for anything other than review. The author apparently recognizes that an outline this broad in scope cannot be that instructive either, and limits the introductory portion of each chapter to relevant tables and equations that an engineer/scientist must know to work problems. It is assumed you have other books to function as detailed tutorials. I have to say that the differential equations portions of this outline were far superior to the individual Schaum's outlines for those subjects. Also, the Fourier series and Fourier integral chapters were a bit too theoretical for most engineers, as many of the problems involved proofs or demonstrating properties rather than using the theory to solve problems. However, most chapters have a good mix of exercises - a few proofs, straight numerical problems, and applied exercises such as problems on circuit analysis, for example.

If you need a broad overview of the mathematics that an engineer must know from a problem-solving perspective, with small lessons on each topic, might I also suggest "Engineering Mathematics" and "Advanced Engineering Mathematics" by Stroud. Both of those books lead you by the hand and cover everything from high school through graduate school-level mathematics from an engineer's perspective. This outline would go great with those two books, as this outline can serve as a test of your comprehension of those two books by serving as a source of additional solved problems. I would suggest you get this book and keep it around as one of several good references on applied mathematics.

A good review of topics

This book goes through all the basics needed to master advanced mathematics. It covers differential equations; linear differential equations; Laplace transformations; vector analysis; multiple, line and surface integrals with the theorems; Fourier series and integrals; gamma and beta functions, Bessel functions, Legendre and othhogonal functions, partial differential equations, complex variables and conformal mapping, complex inversion formula (for Laplace transformations); and matrices. At the beginning is also a review of the basic terms and rules.
This is a good book to review to refresh your memory of what you studied in school. If you are in school now, this will be a good supplement. As with other books in this series, there are problems you can work to test your knowledge, but not all of them have the answers printed in the book. This is a little bothersome, but the book is still worth the investment.

worth the purchase

I used this book as a text for an applied math course. The presentation of the book is well done. The emphasis was on gaining competency through practice and not on proving rigorous theories per se (though some of that is included). The author worked out in detail many example problems that I found to be helpful.

As a caveat, there were MANY typos in the book. A few of the theorems were even stated incorrectly. Some of the answers in the back of the book are incorrect. For at least one homework problem that I know of you are tasked with proving something that is just plain wrong. The end result: lots of wasted time. I found the treatment of linear algebra to be a little outdated; he focuses mainly on properties of determinants and inverses, which these days is not the way to approach applied linear algebra.

I'm more forgiving of these blunders because the book is low priced. All in all it was helpful to me as an aid to learning.
