A must have

Dr. Barbero new book is probably the best book available for those, with some knowledge about composite materials, aiming to perform advanced numerical simulations of composite structures. It covers all main topics related to the simulation of these materials, from its mechanical characterization (either using an analytical approach, either using a homogenization method) to some of their most complex failure modes, such as delamination.

The book not only provides the theory required for simulating composite structures, but it is also full of examples in which the theory exposed is applied using a finite element code (ANSYS). This is one of the most compelling features of this book. Although having the examples particularized for ANSYS can seem as a drawback, they are so wisely commented that their implementation in any other finite element code becomes an easy task.

Summarizing, this is a must have book for all those engineers and researchers interested in the advance simulation of composite materials, that can be used as an introductory book as well as a consultation reference. A perfect complement to Barbero's first book: Introduction to Composite Materials Design (Materials Science & Engineering Series)

Perfect book for engineers/technologists working with computational modeling of mechanical behavior for composite materials. The author explains very crucial things like damage mechanics and damage plasticity in a very lucid way. While reading the chapter on "damage mechanics", you will feel that you are inside a class and the professor explains all the subtle points (starting from the first principle of thermodynamics) of damage in a thermodynamic framework. But the reader should have some basic background about finite element method and notations (Tensorial and indicial notations) and fundamentals of elasticity. The author compared use of different types of elements both in context of ANSYS & ABAQUS. The example problems are focused only in ANSYS application, but MATLAB codes and other source codes are also available with the book companion site for laminate strength analysis. With the knowledge of elasticity any one can buy this book for self-study.
Careful: This book is not for learning basics of finite element analysis; but for application purpose this book is excellent and compact in the context of composite material modeling.
