About the Author

Kevin T. Pickering is Professor of Sedimentology & Stratigraphy in the Department of Earth Sciences at University College London, U.K. He has published ~140 peer-reviewed papers, co-authored 6 books and edited 3 books on aspects of deep-water sediments and global environmental issues. He managed the industry-sponsored Ainsa Project, an integrated outcrop-subsurface drilling project to understand deep-marine channels in the Spanish Pyrenees, and has sailed on four international scientific drilling expeditions (DSDP, ODP, IODP). In 2010, in recognition of his research, Pickering was elected as a Fellow of the Geological Society of America.

Richard N. Hiscott is an Emeritus Professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada.  His 40 years of process-oriented research covers ancient deep-sea to alluvial facies of Proterozoic to Cretaceous age, four Ocean Drilling Program campaigns including Amazon submarine fan, Quaternary sedimentology of the Labrador Sea, Santa Monica Basin, and the Black Sea region including dynamics of the saline gravity current that enters the low-salinity Black Sea through the Bosphorus Strait.

Jeffrey H. Reed is Professor in the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech and a core-faculty member of its Mobile and Portable Radio Research Group (MPRG), one of the world's leading university research groups on advanced wireless communications. Until recently he served as MPRG's director. His most recent book is Software Radio: A Modern Approach to Radio Design (Prentice-Hall, 2002, 0130811580). Professor Reed is a Fellow of the IEEE.

This book's additional contributors include government researchers and faculty and students at Virginia Tech's Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

To a great extent, this book was inspired by the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency project called NETEX. The program manager, Stephen Griggs, recognized that far too little information about Ultra Wideband (UWB), particularly pulse-based UWB systems, appeared in the literature. Moreover, he believed that the UWB information available in the public domain is sometimes incorrect and misleading, particularly regarding interference issues with UWB. Thus, the program participants were encouraged to widely disseminate the results of the NETEX program to help clarify many of these outstanding issues. Much of the information presented in this book is a direct result of this program and other UWB research programs from Virginia Tech and the Army Research Lab.

UWB activity has picked up immensely since the Federal Communication Commission's 2002 decision to allow for the transmission of UWB and the subsequent standardization efforts with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. Some see UWB as an enabling technology for new wireless applications that span from high-data-rate transmission of raw multimedia video to new location-aware, low-data-rate, and low-power communication of sensor data. Non-communication applications, such as through-the-wall imaging and ground-penetrating radar, also capture the imagination of researchers and entrepreneurs.

The controversy surrounding the standardization efforts illustrates the many debatable issues of UWB. From an academic perspective, many fundamental research issues remain unresolved, including the best modulation types for particular applications, efficient broadband antennas with a desirable form factor, propagation characteristics of UWB in various environments, the impact of UWB physical layer attributes on the networking layers, and the list continues. UWB will certainly be the subject of many theses and dissertations to come.

This book provides a broad technical view of UWB. Chapters 2 and 3 deal with simulation of propagation issues, modeling, and channel simulation, and much of this information is presented in the public domain for the first time. Chapter 4 focuses on antennas and outlines some surprising differences in antenna performance with respect to narrowband systems. Chapter 5 examines transmitter design issues and covers some of the basic modulation principles of UWB. Chapter 6 presents an overview of receiver design issues and explains how impulse UWB systems are particularly different from conventional carrier-based systems. Chapter 7 addresses the controversial interference issues of UWB; unlike traditional communications, UWB may intentionally transmit co-channel with other communication signals. Chapter 8 examines how to simulate UWB systems; such simulation requires more finesse because broadband signals encounter excessive simulation time if structured incorrectly. Chapter 9 describes how the physical layer capabilities of UWB impact the performance and design of upper layers. Finally, applications and case studies of existing UWB systems are addressed in Chapter 10.

This is a great book for anybody considering becoming a Chief Information Officer, Chief Technology Officer, or Chief Security Officer. It provides great insights into many of the stakeholder and technical challenges you may face.

A laudable goal, but its execution sends the wrong message to business professionals

It is hard to criticize a book dedicated to looking at the challenges facing IT leaders on a personal and professional level. The goal of Adventures of an IT Leader are admirable, present IT in a human light using a combination of techniques from Goldratt's business novel classic "The Goal" to the case studies that are featured monthly in the Harvard Business Review.

The authors clearly know their stuff. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the authors have not been able to translate that knowledge into an effective business/IT book. While this book is interesting, well written and flows pretty good it does not provide the busienss person -- particularly one with a jaundiced view if IT, or the IT professional with the insights needed to change their circumstances.

The book seems to be written for the business person to help them understand IT. The protagonist Jim Barton is a business leader asked to assume the role of CIO without any technical experience. This again is a great goal, however there are some significant issues in the book.

I do not recommend this book be given by an IT professional to a business executive. Particularly if you want to show a business person what life in IT is all about.

Furthermore I would not recommend a business person read this book in an attempt to learn what IT is all about.

While these recommendations are harsh here are my reasons:

1. A business reader can easily interpret the book as making IT look incompetent, from managers who do not understand what their staff do (Chapter 3) to their inability to control major projects (Chapter 7), to their in ability to protect the company (Chapter 11).

2. From a business perspective, the book resolves every IT issue with spending more money. Sure the leader shuts down a project, only to pay $3 million and get nothing, then have to start the project up all over again for more money. The solution pattern offered in the book could easily support business suspicions that IT is more about spending money than creating value.

3. IT people may play well with each other but play poorly with the business. The major project (Chapter 7) that was led by the business is cancelled and pulled back up under IT. The new CIO takes over responsibility for the IT budget across the enterprise - because they cannot get infrastructure projects funded. The business and IT cannot agree on the status of projects, turning a meeting into a finger pointing session led by the IT person (Chapter 6)

4. The book brushes past major concepts and challenges in IT with short and passing explanations. Terms like shared service, web 2.0, and infrastructure are discussed in passing which undercuts their importance to the business and the future of IT.

5. That you only have to be a CIO for a year, one in which you handle a crisis but do not seem to deliver any major value, and that you will get your dream job and move up to COO at a bigger company. I know the authors had to end the book, but ending on such a triumphal note when the performance during the year was mediocre at best sends the wrong message to the business reader.

CIOs in real life who work hard, face real challenges, and make real progress. The book does not show much of this. They also have the job an average of 4 years not 365 day wonders. Its true that this is a business fable, but if you are trying to educate people even fables have significant grains of truth to them.

There are other books that describe IT better ranging from "IT Savvy" (Weill and Ross), "The New CIO Leader" (Broadbent and Kitzis), "Straight to the Top" (Smith) among others.

The authors do a good job of sequencing a set of events that IT leaders will recognize: runaway projects, de-motivated staff, security issues, etc. While this book is ok for IT people to read, it does not put these challenges in a particularly interesting light or an environment where new concepts and approaches can be illustrated.

IT professionals will recognize this environment and say that is accurate. That is a good thing. However, the book is not the story of an IT turnaround - rather it is a descriptive story based on the new CIO lurching between IT topic areas (Cost/Value, Project Management, Runaway Projects, IT Priorities/governance, IT and the board) rather than discussing the combination of things that raise IT performance. The authors have drained the story of suspense, decisions, actions and results that are essential in using the business novel format.

IVK - the fictional loan/mortgage originating financial services company has all the characteristics of a poorly run IT shop: lack of standards, a hero culture focused around the CISO, good people in management roles who seemed outgunned. While Barton, the new CIO builds up a white board with key ideas; these ideas are more accumulated than implemented. The result is an IT shop that is more transformed by events than by management and leadership.

The book uses these circumstances to introduce and review concepts that were developed several years ago such as Death march projects, power maps, IT portfolios, etc. Many of these tools are self referential as coming from the Cutter Consortium - the home of one of the three authors. IT professionals will recognize these techniques as they are well established. They will learn little from them as they are not exercised in the text - merely catalogued and described with partial samples attached at the end of some chapters.

I kept reading this book, hoping that it would get better as I agree with the premise and the need to build bridges across IT and the rest of the enterprise. Unfortunately in my experience and from reading this book - I can see where it can do more harm than good -- particularly as a tool to help business people understand IT.

Sorry for such a critical review. I am not trying to bash the book, but when I look at it from a business perspective I see it doing more harm than help. I hope that I have explained the position behind this review and my rating.

Necessity to read 2 books to close the gap between IT and the business

I am not afraid to state that M. McDonald is right with some (not all!) of his criticism about "Adventures...", even at the risk of being the only one doing this. However, I rate the book with a 5-star as it has undoubtedly more than one merit. The sheer fact that there is a book explaining the world of IT in an easy-to-read style without using technical jargon is an achievement in itself. The major aspects of a CIO's life are covered and this has been summarized by other reviewers. But there are important shortcomings. At no place is there a word about the fact that a CIO is mainly managing dependency, due to the fact that he deals with an incredibly immature computer/software industry. Faulty software (leading to crashing projects and later to system instability) and unripe technology (with especially dramatic consequences when it comes to IT security) haven't found their way into this book. A corrupted database is not necessarily the consequence of a renaming of a table; a database can achieve corruption all by itself.
There's another recently published book (that I somehow prefer) with the similar intention to explain IT to the business: Roeltgen's "IT's hidden face". This one takes a different approach as it doesn't have a story-line but works a lot with descriptive examples. Both books have things in common though: the starting point is an IT department in the financial sector; N. Carr's ideas are widely rejected; "IT is different"; the CIO's job being the most volatile one in the business; a CIO can't do his staff's job by himself, just to name these.
"IT's..." proves that these days the IT world can by no means be managed entirely, whereas "Adventures..." makes the reader believe that IT is perfectly manageable by having the right communication, the right governance or by throwing more money at the problem. The example with the DoS is to my opinion described inaccurately (as a life-threatening event for the company) when we all know that these things are daily business and should be managed quite differently than described in the book.
Being myself a business executive in the financial industry, I don't think that it can be stated that Barton did an overwhelmingly good job. He was pushed much more than he was driving.
"Adventures..." presents an ideal world, taking a somewhat academic approach. But that's fine as long as the reader keeps this in mind, whereas the other book is written by a long-term experienced CIO who describes the day-to-day challenges with concrete examples.
It is undoubtedly true that we should head towards a better manageable world in IT, but as long as we have to deal with an immature software industry, this is a dream that will not be achieved soon. "Adventures..." describes exclusively from the perspective of the CIO and his interaction with the business, but leaves out the daily challenges of the ordinary IT staff. "IT's.." offers more details in this respect as it digs much more in the "dirt".
In any case, both books read very well; "IT's..." having on top a touch of humor and "Adventures..." offering a story-line.
Both books explain the IT-world to non-IT-experts and they have the intention to close the communication gap between those incompatible worlds. There's no excuse anymore now for anyone to say "I understand nothing about IT" or "IT is for me a grey monster I want to stay away from". I suggest reading both books. The picture of what IT is about these days should be rather clear after that.

Happy and hopeful scenes of a revolution

Say what you want about oppressive regimes, they always have the best propaganda. Art, when made to serve the purpose of convincing a population that what is going on around them is actually great and wonderful even though they are starving, produces something eerily inspiring, something that taps into a subconscious desire to believe in those in power.

This is the artwork in "Chinese Posters: Art from the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution". These are images of a bright future, where the land is abundant and serves the will of the people, where industry is clean and progressive, bringing fair income to everyone, where everyone pulls their weight with a smile and Chairman Mao shines light on us all. The art here is joyful, optimistic and hopeful. It makes you feel good to look at it. It makes you feel bad knowing that this optimistic, hopeful future never materialized, and was followed by starvation and oppression.

But this is so much more than just a picture book. The author, Ann Tompkins collected these posters while living in China during the Cultural Revolution, a full participant in Mao's glorious dream who wanted to live and work alongside the people forging this Brave New World. Reading her introduction is a bit shocking. I expected a historical critique on the nature of propaganda, not the flip side of the coin, someone who believes in the dream and remains inspired by the message.

And through her eyes, I saw these posters from a different perspective. How progressive, how revolutionary they were at the time. Here were positive images of women working in factories, firing guns and conducting scientific experiments during a time when they were expected to be house wives and mothers. Here were glorious scenes of all human beings struggling together, separated not by race, religion or gender, but bound by the brotherhood of the proletariat. The fact that it failed: is it the fault of the dream or the dreamers? This is the kind of art that makes you ask those questions.

As both an art book and a history book, "Chinese Posters" succeeds beautifully. I enjoyed it much more than I was expecting to, especially after reading the introductions and then looking at the posters in a whole new light.

An insight into Chinese propaganda

This was a fascinating book, and much like David Heather's volume on North Korean propaganda provides an insight into the idealized world of propaganda from a totalitarian government's perspective. The artwork is beautiful, with visions of what a Communist government's ideal Chinese society would look like - strong, committed, loyal and modern with many noble-looking stereotypes ranging from construction workers to soldiers and even peasants. A young Chairman Mao is often depicted in these pictures along with lots of modern technology and happy-looking people.
Many of these posters were published at a time when mass communication was far less effective than now, and the internet was far less widespread in China. For many people, these images of a better China, led by a strong leader towards prosperity would have been very appealing. This book has many examples and is a terrific read.

Beautiful posters, but best used to accompany other texts

This book is filled with beautiful propaganda posters from the communist era in China. The idyllic posters give you a glimpse at the ideology behind communism and accompanying rhetoric like "Women hold up half the sky." In these images we see farmers and factory workers glorified and men and women working alongside each other. These propaganda posters were a departure from China's previous ideal class, the scholar, who studied the classics and did not do manual labor. While we may know Mao's Communist Revolution was meant to change Chinese culture, seeing a visual representation resonates further than words alone.

Although this is a beautiful book, without the background or explanation, it's just a picture book of posters. I used this in a class where we used this book along other texts such as Fanshen and focused on China's history and culture.

Psychology 101 and more...

Do you love trying to figure people out? If you do this book may interest you. However it will also give your brain a good workout. It is definitely a little more challenging than most of the Dummies books I've read.

This book contains information on depression, altered states of consciousness, meditation, altruism, assertiveness, social identity, parenting styles, the different types of intelligence, emotions, personality types and developmental stages of life. If you are interested in mental disorders this book also discusses autism, schizophrenia, PTSD, ADHD, OCD and more.

In the section on the brain there were a few good pictures which will help those unfamiliar with basic biology.

I will say that Freud would have had a thing or two to say about Dr. Cash's recurrent dreams. I'm not so sure I'd have told people about that dream.

This book is filled with interesting tidbits like how most people are spending six hours a day watching TV. How is this even possible? Yikes. No wonders people don't get how I can review so much. I have no cable.

So overall this book is an entertaining read with lots of helpful information for those interested in knowing themselves and others better.

Good for Course Takers

I only recently completed my mandatory Psychology class for college, and enjoyed it. However, I would have liked to have used this book while I was taking the course to immerse myself in more examples. My book contained a lot of theory but not always application. I have retained my Psychology book (it was school specific), and I think it would be easy to bounce back and forth from your primary text to this book for a different expression of the same basic material.

If you are struggling in class, I think this could help out your grade by including more real-world examples to help the material stick. I also feel this will be a great overview for a person who was never forced to take a Psychology class but would like to have a basic understanding for dinner table conversation or Jeopardy.

Nice Addition To The "Dummies" Series: A Commendable Job Covering Quite A Bit Of Ground

I must commend Dr. Cash for an outstanding contribution to the Dummies series. He covers a tremendous amount of ground and by the end of the book I felt I had a good (though very superficial) introduction to the subject. Cash provides enough to spur the curious reader on to deeper research. I say "curious" rather than "serious" because this book is still too superficial for even a Psych 101 class.

I usually skip and skim Dummies books, but I found myself reading this book from cover to cover. Dr. Cash's writing style is casual and witty like a Dummies book should be and I never felt like he was condescending in his writing or writing above the reading level of a typical Dummies book reader.

Bottom line, I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

Langer (Holocaust Testimonies, Yale Univ. Pr., 1991) has edited a collection of personal diaries, fiction, drama, poetry, historical writing, painting, and essays about the Holocaust. In the introductions to the sections and the individual authors, he explains the historic, political, and moral framework of the destruction of European Jewry. The ghettos, transports, camps, escapes, and killings are all described. Jankiel Wiernik's depiction of Treblinka is profoundly disturbing, as are the diaries of the Warsaw, Lodz, and Kovno ghettos. A truly original new series. Looking forward to the next episode!

The plot: An international crew headed by a Norwegian captain has stolen a large oil-tanker. They make their living from stealing oil from pirates around the world. This is very dangerous business! (I will not reveal any spoilers here, but they get involved in a plot that soon turns into something much bigger than they had in mind!)
The story is told by the original voice of Piotr386, a Polish Able seaman that keeps a diary/log from the ship. His writing is not the best, but his energetic voice gives us a really good look into the life onboard the ship.

Sometimes I buy books just because they look good and have a reasonable price. Often I get disappointed, but this one really surprised me. It is a completely original story and an interesting look into the secret world of
black-market shipping. The publisher suggests that this is can be a true story. Is it true? I really don't care. This is one of the most exciting reads I have had in a long time.

Fred Whitfield Fan

I tip my hat to Fred for allowing such an intimate look into his world. Upon reading the book, many of my questions about Fred and how he became a world champion calf-roper were answered. The story of Fred Whitfield was told primarily by Fred, but was augmented by several family members, friends, and influential people in his life. From one chapter to the next, I learned of Fred's experiences through the transitions of life and climaxing at maturity. Un-intentionally, I viewed Fred not only as a calf-roper, but as a professional athlete, business man, cowboy, horseman, Texan, and most importantly as a human driven by "desire."

I hope there is a movie to follow.

Good book

I thought the book was well written. Yes, it would go from Fred speaking, to his mother, to Roy M., but I didn't think it was hard to follow. As a matter of fact, the story flowed quite smoothly. It is a very good example of someone having a goal in mind and overcoming obstacles that others might use as an excuse. He talked about falling off the path, but did a good job of admitting his mistake, facing the consequences, and moving on. I think he underplayed the prejudice and unfairness that he had to deal with. He spoke about some of it and moved on. I thought both the writing and the story were great and have recommended this book to several friends.

Keep on Swingin'

My husband, Tom Reeves, is a "real cowboy" and, back in the day, was a calf roper - - but not of the caliber that Fred is. Both Tom and I have followed Fred's career pretty much all the way to date, and Fred has earned our utmost respect and admiration from Day 1. Fred, your book was written so well, congrats to you and Terri Powers! Keep swingin' that rope, Fred, whether it's for money or simply to satisfy you soul.

Note: Personally, I feel that your greatest prize was finding Cassie!
